This verse in the King James

King James wording
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

The power that moves you outward arrives as a garment from above, so the verse begins with receiving before action.

You are held by a promise from the Father, and what enables you to move comes from above. Waiting has a purpose here: power is received like clothing, not manufactured from within. Your outward witness begins with what is given.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse dissolves the belief that meaningful action depends on generating enough power from within; here, the power comes from above.

ἐνδύσησθε

endýsēsthe

GROWS FROM

ἐνδύω

endýō

to put on; to clothe

“clothed” in this verse is endýsēsthe. The verb pictures being dressed in what enables you, not simply receiving an invisible force. The waiting ends when this clothing from above is received.

ALSO GROWS

endýsate: The father tells the servants to put the best robe on his returning son.

ἐνδύσατε

The same verb makes clothing a picture of what is given to cover and equip you.

enedýsasthe: Those addressed have “put on Christ.”

ἐνεδύσασθε

The same clothing verb links this promise of being clothed with a life received and worn.

δύναμιν

dýnamin

GROWS FROM

δύναμαι

dýnamai

to be able; to have capacity

“power” in this verse is dýnamin. This word carries the sense of ability or capacity to act. Joined to “from on high,” it locates the source of that ability beyond what you can produce on your own.

ALSO GROWS

dýnamai: To be capable of doing something.

δύναμαι

It shows the root idea of power as capacity, not merely status or authority.

dynatós: Able or capable; also powerful.

δυνατός

This related word keeps the emphasis on what can be done through received ability.

What equips a person for outward witness is received from above, and its arrival opens new capacity for life and action.

Until breath is poured out upon us from the heights, and the wilderness will become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field will be counted for a forest.
Isaiah 32:15 · SDVWhat comes from on high precedes the transformation from wilderness to fruitfulness.
And it shall be afterward, that I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your elders will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
Joel 2:28 · SDVThe pouring from above equips people across ages and genders for expression and vision.
But you will take hold of power when the Set-Apart Breath comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the farthest edge of the ground.
Acts 1:8 · SDVReceived power precedes witness that moves outward from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.
For as many of you as have been immersed into the Anointed One have put on the Anointed One.
Galatians 3:27 · SDV

“Put on” uses the same clothing verb as “endued”: both picture something received and worn. The promise here is power from above as clothing that equips you.
