This verse in the King James

King James wording
And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

A work done in Jesus’ name carries his nature even when its worker stands outside the disciples’ circle.

This verse holds two things together: a man is releasing people from devils in Jesus’ name, and the disciples forbid him because he is not with them. The work bears the character carried by the name, while their test is belonging to their circle. That tension is present wherever a group sees a liberating work and still treats affiliation as its boundary.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie exposed is that a work in Jesus’ name can only be recognized when its worker belongs to our circle.

ὀνόματι

onomati

GROWS FROM

ὄνομα

onoma

Name; also the person, character, or reputation represented by a name.

“nature” in this verse is onomati. “In thy name” carries more than a spoken label: the act is done in the character and authority the name represents. The disciples see that name at work, yet draw their boundary around who belongs with them.

ALSO GROWS

onomazō: To name or call by name.

ὀνομάζω

Naming makes an identity known, showing why a name can carry more than a sound.

onomastos: Named, renowned, or well known.

ὀνομαστός

A name can mark the character or reputation by which someone is recognized.

God’s work can appear beyond the circle that expects to recognize or control it.

And Moses said to him, "Are you burning for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would set his breath upon them!"
Numbers 11:29 · SDVMoses welcomes the possibility that the LORD’s spirit rests on people beyond the central group.
But Jesus said, Do not stop him, for there is no one who will do a work of power in my nature who can swiftly speak evil of me.
Mark 9:39 · SDVJesus answers the same boundary by pointing to the work done in his name.
Can anyone hold back the water, so that these should not be immersed, who have taken hold of the Set-Apart Breath just as we have?
Acts 10:47 · SDVThe question recognizes that God’s gift is already present among people outside the speaker’s circle.
I have made your nature visible to the people you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have guarded your word.
John 17:6 · SDV

The same Greek word for “name” appears as something Jesus manifests: the character of God made known. Luke’s verse shows that character at work in a man the disciples do not claim as one of their own.
