This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

The word translated “kingdom” names a rule you can come near, not merely a place you can reach.

Jesus sees that he answers with understanding and says, “You are not far from the governance of God.” Nearness is real, yet the words stop short of saying he is within it. After this, no one dares ask Jesus another question.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that recognizing the truth is the same as already being within God’s governance: Jesus calls the man near, not there.

βασιλεία

basileia

GROWS FROM

βασιλ-

Kingship, royal rule, or reign.

“governance” in this verse is basileia. The Greek word can name kingship or reign, so the verse places the man near God’s active rule, not only near a territory. Its word-family includes both the king and the act of reigning.

ALSO GROWS

basileus: king

βασιλεύς

The king is the one whose rule gives the word-family its royal shape.

basileuō: to reign, to be king

βασιλεύω

This branch names the active exercise of the rule the man is near.

μακράν

makran

GROWS FROM

μακρ-

Long, extended; hence distant.

The Greek word for “far” grows from the idea of extension or length. The same consonants appear in words for what is long in space and what is long in time, giving nearness a measured sense of distance rather than a claim of arrival.

ALSO GROWS

makros: long, far-reaching

μακρός

It makes explicit the length at the root of the distance described here.

makrothymia: patience, slowness to heat

μακροθυμία

The same ⁨μακρ-⁩ root extends “long” from space into time: patience is a long restraint before anger flares.

God’s way comes close enough to hear, recognize, and answer.

But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
Deuteronomy 30:14 · SDVWhat is near can be present in speech and heart, close enough to be answered through action.
From then on Jesus began to cry out and say, Turn, for the governance of the heavens has drawn near.
Matthew 4:17 · SDVThe kingdom is announced as near, within reach of a person’s response.
And heal those without strength who are there, and say to them, The governance of God has drawn near to you.
Luke 10:9 · SDVGod’s governance draws near in words and acts of healing.
The servant therefore fell down and bowed down to him, saying, Lord, be slow to heat with me, and I will give back all to you.
Matthew 18:26 · SDV

The Greek ⁨μακράν⁩ (“far”) in Mark and ⁨μακροθύμησον⁩ (“have patience”) here share the root ⁨μακρ-⁩, carrying the sense of length from space into time. One describes distance; the other, a long restraint before anger flares.
