This verse in the King James

King James wording
And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

The center of this scene is a place of shared condemnation, not distance from it.

You see Jesus crucified between two men called bandits. The placement puts him inside the condemned scene, exposed in their company. Here, the center does not stand apart from those on either side.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that the one at the center is kept apart from those counted as criminals; here, he is placed among them.

λῃστάς

lēistás

GROWS FROM

λῃστ-

lēist-

Banditry and plundering; a robber who takes by force.

“robbers” in this verse is lēistás. Behind “thieves” stands ⁨λῃστής⁩ (lēistēs), meaning robber or bandit, with a plundering sense. That depth places Jesus among men marked as bandits, making his position in the company of the condemned part of the scene’s structure.

ALSO GROWS

lēistēs: Robber or bandit.

λῃστής

This is the singular form behind the verse’s “thieves,” giving the men beside Jesus the character of bandits.

lēisteuō: To rob or act as a bandit.

λῃστεύω

The verb shows the action within the word family: taking by force, rather than a vague label for wrongdoing.

The one at the center enters the location and designation of the condemned.

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the plunder with the strong, because he poured out his living soul to death, and was counted with the rebels. He carried the falling short of many, and for the rebels he stepped in.
Isaiah 53:12 · SDVThe one who pours out his life is counted among those named as transgressors.
For I say to you, what is written must yet reach its end in me, and he was reckoned among the unbounded. For the things concerning me come to their end.
Luke 22:37 · SDVJesus is described as taking the place among the transgressors that this scene shows.
So Jesus also, that he might set the people apart through his own blood, suffered outside the gate.
Hebrews 13:12 · SDVThe condemned one is exposed outside the gate, at the boundary of exclusion.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the plunder with the strong, because he poured out his living soul to death, and was counted with the rebels. He carried the falling short of many, and for the rebels he stepped in.
Isaiah 53:12 · SDV

Mark places Jesus bodily between two men condemned with him; Isaiah names the deeper pattern as being numbered among transgressors. The placement is part of the meaning: he is shown within their company, not set apart from it.
