This verse in the King James

King James wording
Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

Herodias’s “quarrel” is a grievance held against John, but holding a murderous intent does not give her the power to carry it out.

A grievance held against someone can become a desire for their death. The desire is real, but it does not make the killing possible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that hatred gives its bearer control over the life they target.

ἐνεῖχεν

eneichen

GROWS FROM

ἔχω

echō

To have or hold.

“held it against him” in this verse is eneichen. The KJV’s “quarrel” can sound like an outward dispute, but ⁨ἐνέχω⁩ means to hold a grievance against someone. The hostility is pictured as something held in the relationship, even before it becomes an attempted act.

ALSO GROWS

katechō: To hold fast, retain, or restrain.

κατέχω

Its shared hold-word makes visible how something held can also be kept from moving forward.

synechō: To hold together, press, or constrain.

συνέχω

This compound carries the sense of pressure or constraint, echoing the verse’s distinction between a forceful intention and the ability to fulfill it.

A hostile intent can remain real while its fulfillment is restrained.

And David settled in the wilderness, in strongholds, and sat on a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
1 Samuel 23:14 · SDVSaul continues seeking David, yet the verse says David is not delivered into his hand.
So they sought to seize him, but no one put a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 7:30 · SDVThe attempt to seize Jesus is present, but the seizure does not happen.
For Herod feared John, knowing that he was an aligned man and set apart, and he kept watch over him. And when he heard him, he was often left without a way through, and heard him gladly.
Mark 6:20 · SDVHerod’s fear and regard for John help explain why Herodias’s murderous intent does not immediately become action.
For Herod feared John, knowing that he was an aligned man and set apart, and he kept watch over him. And when he heard him, he was often left without a way through, and heard him gladly.
Mark 6:20 · SDV

The next verse gives the restraint in verse 19 a human shape: Herod fears John and keeps watch over him. Herodias’s threat is real, but it is not the only force shaping what happens.
