This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

The disciples’ failure becomes a question about capacity, and the Greek carries that same question into Jesus’ answer in the next verse.

A limit can be spoken plainly in the presence of the one who can reveal what it depends on. Failure stays real, but it need not become a verdict on your capacity; here it becomes an honest question. The next verse answers by returning to the same verb of ability.

ἠδυνήθημεν

ēdynēthēmen

GROWS FROM

δύναμαι

dynamai

To be able; to have capacity or power.

Greek keeps the same capacity verb across the disciples’ “could not” and Jesus’ “can come forth” in the next verse. That echo shifts the focus from a verdict about the disciples to the conditions under which this release becomes possible.

ALSO GROWS

dynamis: Power, ability.

δύναμις

This noun names the capacity at issue in “could not”: the question concerns ability, not merely the act of casting out.

dynatos: Able, capable; possible.

δυνατός

This adjective makes capacity visible as what is within reach or possible.

Human inability opens a question about where power comes from, and the answer locates it beyond unaided capacity.

He gives power to the faint, and to those without might he multiplies strength.
Isaiah 40:29 · SDVThose without might receive strength, showing capacity supplied where it is absent.
I am the vine, and you are the branches. The one who remains in me, and I in him, this one bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 · SDVThe same question of ability appears directly: apart from its source, the branch can do nothing.
And he said to them, This kind can come out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
Mark 9:29 · SDVJesus answers the disciples’ question by naming what this kind of release depends on.
And he said to them, This kind can come out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
Mark 9:29 · SDV

Jesus answers the disciples’ “could not” with the same Greek ability verb: “can come forth” is ⁨δύναται⁩ (dynatai), from ⁨δύναμαι⁩ (dynamai). Their question is not left as a verdict of failed power; the answer names prayer and fasting as the means through which this kind comes out.
