This verse in the King James

King James wording
For he that is not against us is on our part.

The verse locates belonging in the direction of someone’s work, not in whether they belong to your circle.

When another person is doing good in Jesus’ name, their work can serve the same purpose even if they are not part of your group. The verse speaks against treating every outsider as a rival; it recognizes support in what is not set against the shared work.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that anyone outside your group must be against you.

ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν

hyper hēmōn

GROWS FROM

ὑπέρ

hyper

A Greek preposition meaning over or beyond; with a person, it often means for or on behalf of.

“On our part” renders ⁨ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν⁩ (hyper hēmōn, for us or on our behalf), set against ⁨καθ⁩’ ⁨ἡμῶν⁩ (kath’ hēmōn, against us). The contrast pictures opposing directions: the person may be outside the group, yet their work is not moving against it.

ALSO GROWS

hyperentynchánō: Intercede on behalf of

ὑπερεντυγχάνω

In Romans 8:26, this compound uses the same ⁨ὑπέρ⁩ (hyper, for/on behalf of) to describe intercession for us, echoing the supportive direction in this verse.

hypernikáō: Overcome; be more than conquerors

ὑπερνικάω

In Romans 8:37, the same ⁨ὑπέρ⁩ (hyper, beyond) adds the sense of exceeding; here it gives “for us” the sense of active support, not merely being nearby.

God’s work can extend beyond one circle, and its presence is recognized by what it serves rather than who claims it.

And Moses said to him, "Are you burning for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would set his breath upon them!"
Numbers 11:29 · SDVMoses welcomes the possibility that the gift reaches beyond the group he leads.
If then God gave them the same gift as he gave to us, who leaned our weight upon the Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, what was I, that I could withstand God?
Acts 11:17 · SDVThe shared gift crossing a group boundary becomes a reason to recognize God’s work among others.
What then? Only that in every way, whether in show or in truth, the Anointed One is heralded. And in this I rejoice, yes, and I will rejoice.
Philippians 1:18 · SDVThe focus rests on the good being carried forward, even when the people carrying it have mixed motives.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 · SDV

Romans uses the same Greek ⁨ὑπέρ⁩ (hyper, for/on behalf of) in “If God be for us.” Mark applies that same language of support to someone outside the circle, widening the sense of who may stand for the shared good.
