This verse in the King James

King James wording
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

The governance of the heavens enters the field as a seed: its beginning is small, but its nature is already to grow.

The governance of the heavens meets you in a form small enough to overlook, already carrying the possibility of growth. It is taken and sown in a field, joining hidden capacity to ordinary ground. What is present at the beginning does not yet look like its fullness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that what is small or hidden has no real power gives way: the seed’s present size does not measure what it carries.

βασιλεία

basileia

GROWS FROM

βασιλ

basil

Royal authority, kingship, rule.

“kingdom” in this verse is basileia. The word carries the sense of kingship and reigning. Paired with the seed, it presents the heavens’ governance as something that begins its growth within a field.

ALSO GROWS

basileus: king

βασιλεύς

This branch names the source of kingship that the seed image gives a living form.

basileuō: to reign, rule

βασιλεύω

This branch keeps the active expression of governance in view: ruling as something exercised.

ἔσπειρεν

espeiren

GROWS FROM

σπείρω

speirō

To sow, scatter seed.

“sowed” in this verse is espeiren. The verb for sowing belongs to the same word-family as ⁨διασπορά⁩, scattering abroad. Here the governance of the heavens enters a particular field through the act of being sown.

ALSO GROWS

spora: sowing; seed sown

σπορά

This branch holds together the act of sowing and what is placed in the ground.

diaspora: scattering, dispersion

διασπορά

This branch reveals the wider movement contained in the sowing image: seed is spread outward.

What is sown in smallness carries a form of life whose fullness is not yet visible.

And God said, "Let the earth sprout green growth, the seed-bearing plant, and the fruit tree making fruit after its kind, whose seed is in it, upon the earth." And it was so.
Genesis 1:11 · SDVLife appears as seed-bearing growth, with its capacity carried within what is planted.
For who has looked down on the day of small things? They will rejoice and see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel, along with these seven, the eyes of the LORD, roaming through all the earth.
Zechariah 4:10 · SDVThe verse gives small beginnings a future that their present appearance does not reveal.
I planted, Apollos gave to drink, but God made it grow.
1 Corinthians 3:6 · SDVPlanting and watering are beginnings within a growth whose increase comes in time.
And Jesus said to them, Because you do not lean your full weight. For truly, I say to you, if you lean your full weight as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be beyond your strength.
Matthew 17:20 · SDV

The same Greek phrase for a grain of mustard seed appears here, where it images trust. In this verse, that seed images the governance of the heavens; both place hidden capacity inside what seems tiny.
