This verse in the King James

King James wording
So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

The “end of the world” is the completion of an age, and its last act is a boundary drawn through a mixed company.

The age you inhabit has a completion, and at its close the messengers separate the wicked from among the just. The verse leaves that division stark: they are not treated as one undifferentiated company.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that standing among the just makes someone just: the verse places the wicked within their midst until the separation.

αἰῶνος

aiōnos

GROWS FROM

αἰών

aiōn

An age or era, a span of time.

“end of the age” in this verse is aiōnos. The Greek word translated “world” here is aiōn, meaning “age,” rather than kosmos, meaning the ordered world. The phrase points to an age reaching completion, so the focus falls on the closing of a span of time.

ALSO GROWS

aiōnios: Of or belonging to an age.

αἰώνιος

This adjective grows from the same word and keeps the idea of an age present where English can suggest only timelessness.

aiōnes: Ages, the plural of aiōn.

αἰῶνες

The plural preserves the root’s concrete sense of successive ages, rather than a single undifferentiated world.

ἀφοριοῦσιν

aphoriousin

GROWS FROM

⁨ὁρίζω⁩ (horizō), within ⁨ἀφορίζω⁩ (aphorizō)

To mark out or determine a boundary; aphorizō means to separate off.

“mark off” in this verse is aphoriousin. The verb translated “sever” carries the image of marking something off by a boundary. The closing of the age is pictured as a clear division, not a vague fading away.

ALSO GROWS

horizō: Determine, appoint, or mark out.

ὁρίζω

This related verb shows the boundary-setting sense inside the act of separating.

aphōrismenos: Set apart or separated.

ἀφωρισμένος

This form of aphorizō makes visible the state created by the boundary: something is marked off from what surrounds it.

δικαίων

dikaiōn

GROWS FROM

⁨δίκη⁩ (dikē), in ⁨δίκαιος⁩ (dikaios)

Rightness or justice; dikaios describes one who is just or aligned with what is right.

“aligned” in this verse is dikaiōn. “The just” names people by their alignment with rightness, not merely by where they stand. That makes the separation a distinction of character within the company, not simply a sorting of outsiders from insiders.

ALSO GROWS

dikaiosynē: Justice or alignment with what is right.

δικαιοσύνη

The related noun gives the quality by which the just are described.

dikaioō: To set right or declare just.

δικαιόω

This verb shows the same root moving from a quality of rightness to an act of setting right.

At an appointed judgment, what is mixed is separated according to its true character.

Then you will turn back and see between the one in alignment and the one who shakes, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.
Malachi 3:18 · SDVThe distinction between the righteous and wicked becomes plain.
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground shall awake, some to the life of the ages, and some to exposure and contempt for the ages.
Daniel 12:2 · SDVThe awakening ends in two distinct outcomes.
Whose winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean his threshing floor, and gather the wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.
Matthew 3:12 · SDVThe harvest image separates wheat from chaff at the moment of judgment.
As therefore the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.
Matthew 13:40 · SDV

The shared phrase ⁨συντέλεια τοῦ αἰῶνος⁩ (synteleia tou aiōnos, “completion of the age”) appears in both verses. Verse 40 places that closing moment inside the harvest image, where the tares are gathered and burned; verse 49 names the separation that completes the sorting.
