This verse in the King James

King James wording
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Self-made height cannot hold: the one who raises himself is lowered, while the one who lowers himself is raised.

The verse names a present reversal: self-promotion does not secure lasting height, and lowliness does not end in erasure. The posture a person takes gives way to its opposite.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that if you do not raise yourself, you will stay unseen and low. Here, self-made height cannot hold, while lowliness is not the last word.

ὑψόω

hypsoō

GROWS FROM

ὑψ-

hyps-

Height; being raised up.

“lifts high” in this verse is hypsoō. The same Greek verb first describes a person raising himself, then being raised in turn. The active and passive forms expose the reversal: a person cannot secure lasting height by lifting himself.

ALSO GROWS

hypsos: Height; a high place.

ὕψος

This noun shares the height-root and makes clear that exaltation is literally movement upward.

hypsistos: Highest; most high.

ὕψιστος

This related form shows the root’s reach from being raised to the highest place.

ταπεινόω

tapeinoō

GROWS FROM

ταπειν-

tapein-

Low; brought to a low place.

“brought low” in this verse is tapeinoō. The same verb describes lowering oneself and being lowered. In this verse, choosing the low place is followed by being raised; lowliness is a movement, not a permanent sentence.

ALSO GROWS

tapeinos: Low; lowly; humble.

ταπεινός

This adjective carries the same low-place image into a description of a person.

tapeinophrosynē: Lowliness of mind; humility.

ταπεινοφροσύνη

This related compound shows the low-place root extending into a way of seeing oneself.

Self-exalting leads to being brought low, while humility precedes being lifted up.

A man's lifting up brings him low, but weight holds up the low in breath.
Proverbs 29:23 · SDVPride brings a person down, while humility is upheld.
Before breaking, the heart of a man lifts high, and before weight comes bowing.
Proverbs 18:12 · SDVThe verse pairs a high heart with a fall and humility with honour.
Be made low before the face of the LORD, and he will lift you up.
James 4:10 · SDVHumbling oneself leads directly to being lifted up.
Be made low before the face of the LORD, and he will lift you up.
James 4:10 · SDV

James uses the same Greek verbs for humbling and raising that Matthew pairs in this reversal. The shared roots make the movement visible: the low place is followed by being lifted up.
