This verse in the King James

King James wording
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

“Endure” is to remain under the pressure until its completion, and “saved” is to be brought out: the promise is deliverance through the whole span, not exemption from it.

The reader is not promised a life without a hard passage; the promise meets them in the middle of one. Remaining through the whole span leads to deliverance, so ongoing pressure is not by itself proof that deliverance has failed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that deliverance must mean being spared the ordeal from its first moment; here the promise comes after endurance through its full span.

ὑπομείνας

hypomeinas

GROWS FROM

⁨ὑπό⁩ (hypo) + ⁨μένω⁩ (menō)

Remain under; stay beneath or continue in place.

“holds up under” in this verse is hypomeinas. The word translated “endure” is built from ⁨ὑπό⁩ (hypo, under) and ⁨μένω⁩ (menō, remain): endurance is remaining under what presses rather than pretending it is absent. The related noun ⁨ὑπομονή⁩ (hypomonē, endurance or steadfast remaining) keeps that sense of staying in place visible.

ALSO GROWS

menō: Remain, stay, abide.

μένω

It shows that endurance grows from remaining, not from escaping the span before it is complete.

hypomonē: Endurance, steadfast remaining.

ὑπομονή

This noun from the same word family names the staying quality carried by “endure.”

σωθήσεται

sōthēsetai

GROWS FROM

σῴζω

sōzō

Deliver, rescue, preserve; bring through to safety.

“delivered” in this verse is sōthēsetai. The word translated “saved” carries the sense of deliverance or rescue. It gives the promise an image of being brought out at the far side of what has been endured.

ALSO GROWS

sōtēria: Deliverance, rescue.

σωτηρία

The related noun names the outcome promised to the one who remains through the end.

sōtēr: Deliverer, rescuer.

σωτήρ

This related word names the one who brings another through or out.

τέλος

telos

GROWS FROM

τέλος

telos

End, completion, outcome.

“the end” in this verse is telos. The Greek word can name an end, completion, or outcome. Here it gives endurance a full-span horizon: the one who remains does so until the passage has run its course.

ALSO GROWS

teleō: Complete, accomplish, bring to an end.

τελέω

This related verb echoes the sense of reaching completion rather than stopping midway.

teleios: Complete, mature.

τέλειος

Its related sense of completion deepens the idea of an end as a whole course brought to its finish.

Remaining through a trial is portrayed as a path toward what is promised, renewed, or received.

But those who wait upon the LORD exchange their strength; they rise on wings like eagles; they run and do not tire; they walk and do not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 · SDVThose who wait through the span receive renewed strength to continue.
Flourishing is the man who stays under testing, for having been proven he will take hold of the crown of life, which he has promised to those who love him.
James 1:12 · SDVEnduring through testing leads toward the promised crown of life.
For you have need of bearing up under, so that, having done the will of God, you may carry home the promise.
Hebrews 10:36 · SDVPatience carries the reader through the time between faithfulness and receiving what is promised.
And not only that, but we also boast in the pressures, knowing that they work out a bearing up under.
Romans 5:3 · SDV

The word translated “patience” is ⁨ὑπομονή⁩ (hypomonē, endurance or steadfast remaining), the noun from ⁨ὑπομένω⁩ (hypomenō, remain under) in this verse. It shows pressure as the place where this capacity takes shape, while Matthew names the far-end promise as deliverance.
