This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

The shepherd does not merely gather the crowd; he makes its distinction visible by where he places each one.

The gathered people are not left as an undifferentiated crowd: the shepherd places each group on a distinct side, in a distinct relation to him. In the surrounding scene, that placement makes visible how each life meets the hungry, the stranger, the sick, and the imprisoned.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this dissolves is that being present in the crowd means every life stands in the same relation to the king.

στήσει

stēsei

GROWS FROM

⁨στη-⁩/⁨στα-⁩

The Greek root carries the sense of standing; in this verb, to set is to cause to stand or place.

“stands” in this verse is stēsei. English “set” can sound like simply putting things in place, but the Greek verb belongs to the language of standing. The same root appears in words for a standing position and for rising to stand, so the verse pictures each group taking its distinct place before the shepherd.

ALSO GROWS

stasis: A standing or position; in some contexts, a state or faction.

στάσις

It shows the positional sense carried by the root: the shepherd gives each group a distinct place.

anastasis: A rising up; resurrection.

ἀνάστασις

It shares the root’s image of standing, illuminating the weight of being placed before the shepherd.

The shepherd’s judgment makes a person’s relation to vulnerable need visible in where that life stands.

And as for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between the rams and the he-goats.
Ezekiel 34:17 · SDVThe shepherd distinguishes within the flock, making judgment a separation between lives gathered together.
If a brother or sister is naked, and left without the nourishment of the day, And one of you says to them, Go in wholeness, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them what the body needs. What is the profit?
James 2:15-16 · SDVThe response to someone in need reveals what a person’s words alone can conceal.
Whoever has the world's means of living, and gazes upon his brother in need, and shuts his inner parts away from him, how does the love of God remain in him?
1 John 3:17 · SDVSeeing need and withholding care exposes a person’s relation to the love of God.
And I see the dead, small and great, standing before God. The scrolls are opened, and another scroll is opened, which is the book of life. The dead are judged by the things written in the scrolls, according to their works.
Revelation 20:12 · SDV

The verb translated “stand” comes from the same Greek root as “shall set” here: both carry the image of standing in a place. Matthew shows the shepherd placing the groups on distinct sides; Revelation shows the dead standing before God as judgment opens.
