This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

Here, “the least” is still ten homers: appetite has made excess the baseline.

A craving can occupy a whole day, a night, and another day, then make an immense haul seem like the minimum. Even the least gatherer takes ten homers, and the quail are spread around the camp for each person’s use. What is gathered for oneself becomes the landscape around everyone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The assumption that the smallest share in a collective appetite must be small: here, even the least gatherer takes ten homers.

אָסַף

ʾāsaph

GROWS FROM

א־ס־ף

To gather, collect, or bring together.

“gathered” in this verse is ʾāsaph. This root appears twice in the verse: the people gather the quail, then each person’s gathering is measured. Its branches name both an ingathering of crops and an assembly of people, joining the collection of food with the gathering of a community; here the collection swells until even the smallest amount is ten homers.

ALSO GROWS

asif: Ingathering; harvest season.

אָסִיף

The same root names produce brought in, echoing the quail gathered in immense quantity.

asuppah: Collection; assembly, a gathered company.

אֲסֻפָּה

The root can gather people as well as food, linking the collected quail to the camp that the gathering surrounds.

Provision is revealed by what gathering does next: it can sustain others according to need or swell into excess kept for oneself.

And take for yourself of all that is eaten, and gather it to yourself, and it shall be food for you and for them.
Genesis 6:21 · SDVGathering food here prepares it to sustain both the one who gathers and others.
And when they measured it with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing over, and the one who gathered little had no lack. Each one gathered according to his eating.
Exodus 16:18 · SDVThe measure of the gathered provision is sufficiency, so that neither excess nor lack remains.
And they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them among all, as each one had need.
Acts 2:45 · SDVWhat is gathered as communal wealth is distributed according to each person’s need.
And take for yourself of all that is eaten, and gather it to yourself, and it shall be food for you and for them.
Genesis 6:21 · SDV

The same Hebrew root, ⁨אָסַף⁩ (asaph), names the gathering here and the gathering of food in Genesis. There the food is gathered “for thee, and for them”; this verse says the quail are gathered “for themselves,” bringing the purpose of the gathering into view.
