King James wording
King James Version
And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.THE KEY
The journey’s findings become shared knowledge only when the searchers return.
THE MEANING
A search does not end at the place it reaches; it enters shared life when you return with what you have seen. The forty days mark a completed passage from looking outward to bringing that experience home.
THE ROOT
וַיָּשֻׁבוּ
vayyashuvu
GROWS FROM
שׁוב
To turn back, return; in some forms, to bring back or restore.
“returned” in this verse is vayyashuvu. The Hebrew verb begins with the concrete motion of turning back. The same root can describe restoration elsewhere, so return carries a wider sense of bringing something back within reach; here, the scouts return from the land with what they have seen.
ALSO GROWS
veshavta: To return.
וְשַׁבְתָּ
The same root names a change of direction, whether returning from a journey or turning back toward God.
yeshovev: To restore or bring back.
יְשׁוֹבֵב
This usage opens the root’s wider sense: returning can also mean bringing something back into wholeness.
מִתּוּר
mittur
GROWS FROM
תור
To explore, scout, or search out.
“scouting out” in this verse is mittur. The Hebrew word describes active exploration, ranging through a place to see what is there. The same root appears when a place is searched out ahead of a journey, linking exploration with finding a way forward.
ALSO GROWS
vayyaturu: They searched or explored the land.
וַיָּתֻרוּ
This earlier use names the scouts’ activity with the same root that describes the search from which they now return.
latur: To search out a place.
לָתוּר
The root can describe seeking a place ahead of the travelers, making exploration part of finding where the journey can lead.
THE PATTERN
What is gathered on a journey becomes shareable knowledge when the traveler returns.
Going, he goes and weeps, carrying the bag of seed; coming, he comes in a ringing cry, carrying his sheaves. The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons submit to us in your nature.THE THREAD
He went before you on the way, circling ahead to find you a place to set your tents, in fire by night to show you the way you should go, and in a cloud by day.The same Hebrew root, תור (tur), describes the scouts exploring the land and the LORD searching out a place ahead of the travelers. The shared word links looking over a territory with seeking a place where the journey can go.
