This verse in the King James

King James wording
Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.

The danger is not the climb itself but climbing while the LORD is absent from your midst.

This verse speaks into the moment when you are pressing forward: motion alone does not mean the LORD is with you. When the LORD is not in your midst, the advance you expect to protect you can leave you exposed before opposition.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that determination or momentum guarantees protection: going forward cannot make the LORD present by force.

בְּקִרְבְּכֶם

bəqirbəḵem

GROWS FROM

קרב

q-r-b

draw near; approach

“in your midst” in this verse is bəqirbəḵem. The word rendered “among” belongs to the language of nearness and approach. The warning turns on whether the LORD is in their midst; upward momentum cannot supply that nearness.

ALSO GROWS

qarov: near

קָרוֹב

This branch makes the verse’s concern with the LORD’s nearness audible beneath “among.”

qorban: drawing near

קָרְבָּן

The same root names drawing near, keeping nearness at the center of the warning.

תַּעֲלוּ

taʿalu

GROWS FROM

עלה

ʿ-l-h

rise; ascend; go up

“Do not go up” in this verse is taʿalu. The command names a real ascent, but the direction of movement does not guarantee protection. The verse sets the climb beside the absence of the LORD in their midst.

ALSO GROWS

ʿolah: ascent; burnt offering

עֹלָה

Its name carries the idea of what goes up, echoing the verse’s literal language of ascent.

maʿalah: ascent; step

מַעֲלָה

This related word keeps “go up” connected to a wider language of rising, without making ascent itself a promise of safety.

Action pursued apart from the LORD’s presence cannot secure the life or victory it seeks.

And she said, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. And he woke from his sleep, and said, I will go out as I have done before, time after time, and shake myself loose. But he did not perceive that the LORD had turned aside from him.
Judges 16:20 · SDVSamson expects his familiar strength to return, but his movement cannot replace the LORD’s departed presence.
I am the vine, and you are the branches. The one who remains in me, and I in him, this one bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 · SDVThe image of the vine makes the same dependence plain: fruitfulness comes through abiding, not independent effort.
The LORD is near to all who call out to him, to all who call out to him in truth.
Psalm 145:18 · SDV

Numbers says the LORD is not ⁨בְּקִרְבְּכֶם⁩ (bəqirbəḵem, in your midst); this psalm says the LORD is ⁨קָרוֹב⁩ (qarov, near), from the same root ⁨קרב⁩ (q-r-b). The shared root brings the warning into focus: the question is the LORD’s nearness in your midst, not the momentum of your ascent.
