This verse in the King James

King James wording
And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:

The water called “running” here is literally “living,” so the rite places life in motion against the residue of burning.

The verse presents uncleanness as a condition met by a prepared cleansing: the burned remains of the purification offering are joined with living water in a vessel. What remains after burning becomes part of a cleansing mixture when living water is placed over it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that uncleanness is an irreversible identity dissolves here: the verse names a cleansing preparation specifically for the unclean person.

מַיִם חַיִּים

mayim chayyim

GROWS FROM

חיה

chayah

to live; be alive

“living waters” in this verse is mayim chayyim. The Hebrew phrase means “living water.” The water is characterized by life, not only by motion, bringing life in contact with the residue of burning.

ALSO GROWS

chai: living; alive

חַי

This adjective names the quality carried by the water in the verse.

chayyim: life; living

חַיִּים

This form shares the life-root and shows what “running water” holds in Hebrew: water described as living.

הַחַטָּאת

ha-chatta't

GROWS FROM

חטא

chata

to miss; fail; incur fault

“burning of the offering for falling short” in this verse is ha-chatta't. The word rendered here as “purification for sin” is chatta’t, from the root meaning “miss.” The same word can name both the missing and the purification offering, joining the condition with a means of cleansing.

ALSO GROWS

chet: missing; fault

חֵטְא

This names the condition associated with the offering whose ashes are used in the verse.

chatta't: missing; sin offering or purification offering

חַטָּאת

This is the word used for the burnt heifer’s offering, whose remains enter the cleansing preparation.

Cleansing is presented as something prepared and applied to the unclean, with water and sacrificial material made part of the process.

And the priest shall command that one of the birds be slaughtered in a clay vessel over living waters.
Leviticus 14:5 · SDVAnother purification rite places a bird’s death in an earthen vessel over the same living water.
Then I will sprinkle clean waters upon you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your uncleannesses and from all your idols.
Ezekiel 36:25 · SDVClean water is applied to what is unclean, and the result is cleanness.
For if the blood of bulls and goats, with the ash of a heifer sprinkled on those made common, sets apart to the cleanness of the flesh.
Hebrews 9:13 · SDVThe heifer’s ashes are named as part of a preparation that purifies the unclean.
And the priest shall command that one of the birds be slaughtered in a clay vessel over living waters.
Leviticus 14:5 · SDV

Leviticus uses the same Hebrew phrase, mayim chayyim, meaning “living water,” in another purification rite and places it in an earthen vessel. The shared phrase lets “running” carry the quality of life in motion.
