King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,THE KEY
The voice that will order the camp first addresses Moses, whose name is linked to being drawn out.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s word reaches you as something spoken and directed, not as an idea you must manufacture. It meets Moses and Aaron together; what follows begins with a word held in common.
THE ROOT
וַיְדַבֵּר
vayedabber from davar
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak or declare; as a noun, word or matter.
“spoke” in this verse is vayedabber from davar. The word translated “spake” belongs to a root whose noun branch can mean both a word and a matter. The LORD’s speech is not merely sound: it carries what will take shape in the camp.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word, matter, or affair
דָּבָר
The same root holds speech together with the matter being spoken about.
dibber: Spoke or declared
דִּבֵּר
This verb form makes the spoken act itself visible in the verse.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
m-sh-h
To draw out.
The Torah links Moses’ name to the verb for drawing out. The one addressed here carries a name associated with being drawn out; now the word reaches him and begins to give shape to what comes next.
ALSO GROWS
meshitihu: I drew him out
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
In Exodus 2:10, Pharaoh’s daughter explains Moses’ name with this form of the root.
mashah: To draw out
מָשָׁה
This is the verb behind the name’s Torah wordplay, bringing the movement of being drawn out into view.
THE PATTERN
A spoken divine word calls people into a place and order they cannot generate for themselves.
And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here I am.Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own banner, with the signs of their father's house, facing the tent of meeting, round about, shall they pitch. As they served the Lord and fasted, the Set-Apart Breath said, Mark off for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.THE THREAD
And he bent you low, and made you hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had never perceived, nor had your fathers, so that he might make you perceive that humankind does not live by bread alone, but by every word that goes out from the mouth of the LORD does humankind live. The word translated “word” here is דָּבָר (davar), from the same root as “spake” in Numbers 2:1. Together, the verses show speech as more than a message: the spoken word carries the matter by which life is sustained.
