This verse in the King James

King James wording
And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:

Here “soul” is a countable living being: the levy places human and animal lives within the same measure.

This verse places a war levy under the LORD’s claim: one living being is taken from every five hundred among both people and livestock. “Soul” names a living being in this count, so the measure includes human persons, cattle, donkeys, and sheep. Calling it tribute does not make the taking less stark.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that “soul” here means an inner part unique to humans: the count includes animals as well as people.

נֶפֶשׁ

nephesh

GROWS FROM

נ־פ־שׁ

n-p-sh

The noun names a living being or self; a related verb means to be refreshed or rest.

“living soul” in this verse is nephesh. Here nefesh is not an invisible part set apart from the body: it is the living being counted in the levy. The same word can name a human or an animal, a breadth that the English “soul” can obscure.

ALSO GROWS

nephesh: A living being, person, or living soul.

נֶפֶשׁ

This is the word used for the one counted from every five hundred, across both human persons and livestock.

yinnāphēsh: Be refreshed; rest (Exodus 23:12).

יִנָּפֵשׁ

This related verbal form connects the root to a living being’s respite, while Numbers counts that being as a life within the levy.

Scripture uses “living soul” language for living beings, including both animals and humans.

And God said, "Let the earth bring out living soul after its kind, cattle, creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind." And it was so.
Genesis 1:24 · SDVThe Hebrew phrase behind “living creature” includes nephesh, the same word used for the life counted in Numbers.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDVThe human, too, becomes a nephesh, a living being, not a separate inner part.
Then those who gladly took his word in were immersed, and that day about three thousand living souls were added to them.
Acts 2:41 · SDVThe Greek word psychai, “souls,” counts people themselves, carrying the whole-being sense into the New Testament.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Genesis calls the formed human a living soul with nephesh; Genesis 1:24 uses the same word in its phrase for living creatures. That shared usage opens “one soul” in Numbers as a count of living beings, with people and animals both included.
