This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD’s heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The LORD’s heave offering here is an assessed levy, so its sacred destination does not make the transfer voluntary.

A required levy passes into the priest’s hands and is named as the LORD’s raised contribution. The verse holds the command and the sacred designation together: calling the transfer an offering does not erase the force of the tribute.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A sacred destination does not turn a commanded levy into a freely given gift.

תְּרוּמָה

terumah

GROWS FROM

רוּם

rum

To rise or be high; in causative forms, to raise or lift up.

“lifted offering” in this verse is terumah. ⁨תְּרוּמָה⁩ (terumah) means a raised contribution or heave offering, linking the portion’s name with being lifted or set apart. Its sacred designation and its transfer to Eleazar are distinct movements: it is raised as the LORD’s portion, then handed to its recipient.

ALSO GROWS

herim: Raised or lifted up.

הֵרִים

This causative form of the root makes the lifting image inside heave offering audible.

ram: High or elevated.

רָם

The same root carries the sense of height, giving the offering the added image of a portion raised from ordinary use.

וַיִּתֵּן

wayyitten

GROWS FROM

נָתַן

n-t-n

To give, set, or place.

The root of gave also carries the sense of placing: the verse shows the tribute being assigned to Eleazar, not merely labeled as sacred. The recipient is part of the transfer’s meaning.

ALSO GROWS

mattan: A gift or present.

מַתָּן

This noun from the same root shows giving as a concrete thing passed from one hand to another.

mattanah: A gift or offering.

מַתָּנָה

This branch reinforces that the root’s act of giving produces something placed in another’s care.

מֹשֶׁה

Mosheh

GROWS FROM

מָשָׁה

m-sh-h

To draw out; the name’s biblical wordplay associates Moses with being drawn out of water.

The name-nature echo of Moses is being drawn out, an image of emergence carried by the giver’s name. That name connection adds a layer to the verse without sharing the root of heave offering.

ALSO GROWS

mashah: To draw out.

מָשָׁה

This verb supplies the name’s biblical wordplay and its image of emergence.

Mosheh: The one drawn out, in the name’s biblical wordplay.

מֹשֶׁה

The name gives the verse’s human actor a nature associated with being drawn out.

A sacred claim takes material form when a defined portion moves into an assigned recipient’s hands.

But the tenths of the children of Israel, which they lift up to the LORD as a lifted offering, I have given to the Levites as a holding. Therefore I have said to them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no holding.
Numbers 18:24 · SDVA portion named as the LORD’s offering is materially assigned to the Levites.
Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his nature to dwell there. There you shall bring all that I command you, your ascending offerings, and your slain offerings, your tithes, and the lifting of your hand, and all your choice vows which you vow to the LORD.
Deuteronomy 12:11 · SDVThe commanded offerings and the heave offering of the hand move toward an appointed place.
and set them down at the feet of the sent ones, and it was given out to each as anyone had need.
Acts 4:35 · SDVWhat is given is placed in designated hands and then distributed according to need.
It is Aaron's and his sons' by statute for the ages, from the children of Israel. For it is a lifted offering, and it is a lifted offering from the children of Israel, from the sacrifice of their offerings of wholeness, even their lifted offering to the LORD.
Exodus 29:28 · SDV

Exodus uses ⁨תְּרוּמָה⁩ (terumah, raised contribution) for the share assigned to Aaron and his sons; Numbers places such a share in Eleazar’s hands. The shared root connects the offering’s raised status with its destination.
