King James wording
King James Version
Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:THE KEY
The verse places vulnerable lives and the household’s acquired livelihood inside the same boundary of safety.
THE MEANING
Children, wives, flocks, and cattle all have a place in this sentence. The household’s life includes both the people who depend on it and the resources that sustain it, held together in the cities of Gilead.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the assumption that those who stay in place are outside the movement: their safety and livelihood are explicitly part of what is being arranged.
THE ROOT
מִקְנֵנוּ
miqnenû
GROWS FROM
קנה
Q-N-H
Acquire, gain, or hold possession.
English “flocks” can sound like a bare list of animals; מִקְנֶה (miqneh, livestock or acquired property) also carries the sense of what is held. The root joins the animals to the household’s livelihood, which the verse places alongside its people in the same cities.
ALSO GROWS
miqneh: Livestock or acquired holdings.
מִקְנֶה
This is the base form behind “flocks” here, letting the animals register as household provision.
qoneh: One who acquires or possesses.
קֹנֶה
The same root can name the one who holds, not only what is held; Genesis 14:19 uses it for the “possessor of heaven and earth.”
qinyan: Property or something acquired.
קִנְיָן
This branch makes the link between livestock and the household’s material holdings explicit.
THE PATTERN
The care of a household includes both its people and the means of sustaining them, with each held in view.
You will settle in the land of Goshen, and you will be close to me, you and your children and your children's children, and your flocks and your herds, and all that is yours.Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall settle in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you will cross over armed before your brothers, all the mighty men of strength, and help them.THE THREAD
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of God Most High, holder of heaven and earth. The word behind “flocks,” מִקְנֶה (miqneh, livestock or acquired property), shares the root קנה (qanah, acquire or possess) with “possessor.” Genesis uses that same root for the one who holds heaven and earth, opening the household’s livestock as held provision within a larger field of possession.
