This verse in the King James

King James wording
Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

The high priest’s death does not create a home for the slayer; it ends the boundary keeping him from the land already called his.

The slayer remains in the city of refuge until the high priest dies; then he returns to his own land. Even while access is withheld, the land is still named as his possession, and the verse marks an end to his confinement.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being confined means you have lost the place that is yours. Here, the slayer’s land remains his even while he is barred from it.

יָשׁוּב

yashuv

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

turn back; return

⁨יָשׁוּב⁩ (yashuv, will return) comes from ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv, turn back or return), which also gives ⁨הֵשִׁיב⁩ (hashiv, bring back or restore) and ⁨תְּשׁוּבָה⁩ (teshuvah, return or turning). The movement here is more than leaving one place for another: the slayer turns back toward what remains his.

ALSO GROWS

hashiv: bring back; restore

הֵשִׁיב

This causative form shows how the root of “return” can also carry the sense of restoring someone to a place.

teshuvah: return; turning back

תְּשׁוּבָה

This noun makes the root’s turning movement explicit: the slayer’s return is a turning back to his land.

אֲחֻזָּתוֹ

achuzzato

GROWS FROM

אָחַז

achaz

grasp; take hold

⁨אֲחֻזָּתוֹ⁩ (achuzzato, his possession) grows from ⁨אָחַז⁩ (achaz, grasp or hold). The word for his land carries the sense of a holding, and that holding remains attached to him during his absence.

ALSO GROWS

achaz: grasp; take hold

אָחַז

The verb beneath “possession” gives the land a concrete sense as something held.

achuzzah: holding; possession

אֲחֻזָּה

This noun names the land as a holding that the slayer returns to after the boundary ends.

When a boundary ends, release reopens the path to an inheritance.

And you shall set apart the fiftieth year, and proclaim a free flowing through all the land to all who settle in it. It shall be a ram's horn year for you, and you shall turn back each to his holding, and each to his family you shall turn back.
Leviticus 25:10 · SDVJubilee marks release by sending each person back to their possession and family.
And for this reason he is the one who stands in the middle of a new covenant, so that, with a death having come for the release from the crossings over under the first covenant, those who are called might take hold of the promise of the inheritance of the ages.
Hebrews 9:15 · SDVHere death marks the passage through which those called receive the promise of an inheritance.
And you shall set apart the fiftieth year, and proclaim a free flowing through all the land to all who settle in it. It shall be a ram's horn year for you, and you shall turn back each to his holding, and each to his family you shall turn back.
Leviticus 25:10 · SDV

Leviticus pairs ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv, return) with ⁨אֲחֻזָּה⁩ (achuzzah, possession), the same roots behind “return” and “his possession” here. Numbers ties that return to the high priest’s death; Leviticus ties the return of each person to their holding to Jubilee release.
