This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put them on a bar:

The instruments are covered so their service can continue as they travel.

When what serves is out of sight, it can still be moving toward its next use. Here covering and carrying belong to the same work: the instruments are wrapped, then placed on a bar to be borne onward.

יְשָׁרְתוּ

yeshartu

GROWS FROM

שרת

serve, attend, minister

“attend in the set-apart place” in this verse is yeshartu. The verse uses the same root for the instruments of service and the act of serving: the tools are named by the work they enable. Their being covered for transport does not end their service; the repeated root holds the instruments and their purpose together.

ALSO GROWS

mesharet: attendant, minister

מְשָׁרֵת

The attendant is named by the same serving root as the work these instruments support.

sherut: service

שֵׁרוּת

This noun keeps the verse’s focus on service as both a role and a practiced activity.

מִכְסֵה

mikhseh

GROWS FROM

כסה

cover, conceal from view

The verse repeats this root as an action and as the covering that receives the instruments. Protection is the form in which these tools travel, not a sign that their service has ended.

ALSO GROWS

mekhasseh: one who covers; covering

מְכַסֶּה

This form shares the root’s consonants and names the action that is performed over the instruments.

mikhseh: covering

מִכְסֵה

This noun in the verse names what encloses the instruments for their journey.

וְנָתְנוּ

venatnu

GROWS FROM

נתן

give, set, place

“set them in” in this verse is venatnu. This root appears as the objects are placed in the wrapping and then on the bar. Its range of giving and setting adds the sense of a load entrusted to its next bearer.

ALSO GROWS

mattanah: gift

מַתָּנָה

A gift is something given or entrusted, carrying the root’s sense of placing something into another’s hands.

venatnu: they shall place

וְנָתְנוּ

The repeated placement in the verse orders the covered instruments for carrying.

What carries value can be veiled or held in a vessel without ceasing to carry it.

You shall set within it the ark of the witness, and screen the ark with the curtain.
Exodus 40:3 · SDVThe ark is placed within the tent and covered, remaining present though veiled.
But we hold this treasure in clay vessels, so that the overflow of strength may be of God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:7 · SDVThe treasure remains within its vessel; what carries it does not diminish its value.
A Psalm of David, Maschil. Flourishing is the one whose rebellion is released, whose shortcomings are covered.
Psalm 32:1 · SDV

The word “covered” here comes from the same Hebrew root ⁨כסה⁩ as the covering over the instruments. Numbers uses covering for what is carried; this verse extends the root’s reach to what is concealed from view.
