This verse in the King James

King James wording
Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

The verse threatens more than the loss of wise advisers: it names the removal of understanding itself.

The LORD’s words place Edom’s wise men under destruction and remove understanding from Mount Esau; both the people and the capacity they embody stand within the judgment. For the reader now, the verse makes wisdom no guaranteed shelter: counsel may disappear, and with it the power to discern.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that clever advisers or sound judgment make a people untouchable dissolves here: the judgment reaches both the advisers and the faculty of understanding.

וְהַאֲבַדְתִּי

weha'avadti

GROWS FROM

אבד

ʾ-b-d

Perish or be lost; in the causative form, cause to perish or destroy.

“make the wise lose their way” in this verse is weha'avadti. The verb is causative: the LORD names himself as the one who brings about their loss. The parallel lines make that loss reach two dimensions, the wise people disappear, and understanding itself is removed.

ALSO GROWS

ʾābad: Perish; be lost.

אָבַד

This basic form reveals the loss inside the stronger causative form translated “destroy.”

ʾăvaddôn: Destruction; ruin.

אֲבַדּוֹן

This noun from the same root names the ruin that the verse’s verb brings about.

חֲכָמִים

ḥakhamim

GROWS FROM

חכם

ḥ-k-m

Be wise or skillful.

“wise men” in this verse is ḥakhamim. The word points to people embodying practiced wisdom, not merely a collection of facts. Beside “understanding,” it shows judgment reaching both the wise advisers and the discernment they represent.

ALSO GROWS

ḥākām: Wise person; skilled person.

חָכָם

The singular form makes clear that the verse names the people who carry wisdom.

ḥokhmāh: Wisdom; skill.

חָכְמָה

This related noun names the quality that the wise men embody and that the verse’s parallel line says is taken from Edom.

תְּבוּנָה

tevunah

GROWS FROM

בין

b-y-n

Discern or understand.

The verse removes understanding itself alongside the wise men. The root carries the sense of discernment, so the loss reaches the ability to perceive distinctions, not just a store of information.

ALSO GROWS

bīnāh: Understanding; discernment.

בִּינָה

This related noun makes the faculty named in the verse explicit.

mēvīn: One who understands or discerns.

מֵבִין

This form names the person exercising discernment, echoing the wise men removed from Edom.

Judgment can remove both a people’s wise counselors and the discernment needed to act wisely.

He makes counselors walk away stripped, and makes judges fools.
Job 12:17 · SDVThe verse depicts judgment carrying away counselors and undoing the judgment of those who govern.
Therefore, behold, I will add again to do a wonder among this people, even a wonder and a marvel; for the wisdom of their wise ones will lose its way, and the discernment of their discerning ones will be hidden.
Isaiah 29:14 · SDVWisdom and understanding perish together, closely echoing the two losses named in Obadiah.
For it is written, I will make the wisdom of the wise perish, and I will set aside the understanding of the discerning.
1 Corinthians 1:19 · SDVThe verse joins the undoing of wisdom with the undoing of understanding, showing how judgment reaches both counsel and discernment.
Therefore, behold, I will add again to do a wonder among this people, even a wonder and a marvel; for the wisdom of their wise ones will lose its way, and the discernment of their discerning ones will be hidden.
Isaiah 29:14 · SDV

Obadiah’s verb and Isaiah’s “perish” share ⁨אבד⁩ (ʾ-b-d), “perish; be lost”; both verses also use ⁨חכם⁩ (ḥ-k-m), “be wise,” and ⁨בין⁩ (b-y-n), “discern; understand.” Isaiah makes the shared pattern plain: wisdom perishes and understanding is hidden.
