This verse in the King James

King James wording
There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

The Hebrew pictures the fool’s spending as swallowing: the provision in the house is consumed whole.

Your dwelling can hold treasure and oil: stored value and sustaining abundance. Folly swallows what is there, so provision can disappear even while it is present.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A stocked home is not automatically secure; its provision can still be swallowed by careless consumption.

יְבַלְּעֶנּוּ

yəḇallaʿennû

GROWS FROM

בלע

Swallow, engulf, devour.

“swallows it” in this verse is yəḇallaʿennû. The verb carries the image of swallowing, giving the fool’s spending the force of devouring what the wise household has stored. The same root can describe the earth swallowing people, so the image reaches beyond ordinary loss: what is consumed is taken in whole.

ALSO GROWS

yivlaʿ: He swallows or devours.

יִבְלַע

Habakkuk uses this form when the wicked devours someone more righteous, showing how forcefully this root can portray one thing consuming another.

vattivlaʿ: And it swallowed.

וַתִּבְלַע

In Numbers, the earth swallows people; this branch makes clear that the root can picture total engulfment.

שֶׁמֶן

shemen

GROWS FROM

שמן

Grow fat or become rich; fatness, richness.

The word for oil belongs to a root family that also speaks of fatness and richness. The wise dwelling holds more than valuables: it holds abundance that can sustain it.

ALSO GROWS

shamen: Fat, rich.

שָׁמֵן

This adjective shares oil’s root and links the stored oil to a wider image of richness and fullness.

vayyishman: And he grew fat.

וַיִּשְׁמַן

Deuteronomy uses this form for growing fat; it shows the same root describing abundance as a condition, not just a stored substance.

Provision endures when it is gathered and kept; it disappears when it is consumed or squandered.

Wealth from breath shrinks; the one who gathers by hand grows.
Proverbs 13:11 · SDVThe verse contrasts wealth that diminishes with provision that grows through gathering.
But the wise took oil in their vessels along with their lamps.
Matthew 25:4 · SDVThe wise keep oil available, preserving what will sustain their lamps.
After not many days, the younger son gathered everything together and went away into a distant land, and there he scattered his estate while living wastefully.
Luke 15:13 · SDVThe son’s substance is gathered and then wasted, showing provision disappearing through consumption.
Your eyes are too clean to see harm, and you cannot gaze at toil. Why do you look upon the treacherous ones, and hold your tongue when the wicked swallows the man more aligned than he?
Habakkuk 1:13 · SDV

Habakkuk uses the same ⁨בלע⁩ (balaʿ), “swallow, devour,” root for the wicked consuming someone more righteous. That shared verb lets you hear the force beneath Proverbs’ “spendeth it up”: folly’s use of provision is pictured as devouring.
