This verse in the King James

King James wording
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

At a ruler’s table, the meal is also an encounter with power, and the Hebrew puts discernment at the center of receiving it.

You sit before an offer shaped by the power of the one who provides it. The verse places discernment between you and the meal: what lies before you includes the circumstances and influence carried with it. It speaks to each attractive offer that arrives with more around it than appetite first notices.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that an invitation is only what is served; this verse holds the meal within the power relationship and the setting around it.

בִּין תָּבִין

bîn tāvîn

GROWS FROM

ב־י־ן

B-Y-N

Discern, distinguish, understand.

“discern closely” in this verse is bîn tāvîn. The Hebrew repeats the root in an emphatic form: discern, you shall discern. English smooths that repetition into “consider diligently,” while the Hebrew makes discernment the central act at the table.

ALSO GROWS

binah: understanding, discernment

בִּינָה

This branch names the understanding that comes from distinguishing what is before you.

navon: discerning, perceptive

נָבוֹן

This describes the quality of a person who sees distinctions clearly, the same kind of perception the verse brings to the meal.

לִלְחוֹם

lilḥom

GROWS FROM

ל־ח־ם

L-Ḥ-M

Here the form means eat; the same consonants appear in the word for bread and in another verb meaning fight.

“eat” in this verse is lilḥom. The consonants of the word for eating echo ⁨לֶחֶם⁩ (lechem), bread, and ⁨לָחַם⁩ (lacham), fight. That sound-shape places the meal in tension with the ruler’s power: eating here is more than appetite alone.

ALSO GROWS

lechem: bread, food

לֶחֶם

This branch makes the meal’s food explicit in the sound of the verb for eating.

lacham: fight, wage war

לָחַם

This consonant echo adds tension to a meal taken in the presence of someone who holds power.

What is set before a person is received wisely only when it is first discerned.

The open one leans his weight on every word, but the shrewd one discerns his step.
Proverbs 14:15 · SDVThe prudent person looks closely at the direction ahead instead of accepting what appears before them at face value.
For which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?
Luke 14:28 · SDVThe person who pauses to discern the cost sees what a commitment carries before entering it.
But firm food is for the complete, for those who through practice have their senses exercised to sift good from evil.
Hebrews 5:14 · SDVDiscernment grows into the ability to recognize what is set before you.
The wisdom of the shrewd is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.
Proverbs 14:8 · SDV

Both verses use the ⁨ב־י־ן⁩ root of discerning: here, discern what lies before you; there, understand the path you are on. Together they show wisdom reading both the offered thing and the direction it carries.
