This verse in the King James

King James wording
The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

The heart of kings is placed on the same scale as heaven’s height and earth’s depth: real, yet beyond any observer’s exhaustive search.

When you look at a king from the outside, you cannot fully search the inward place from which his judgments arise. The verse sets that hiddenness beside heaven’s height and earth’s depth, naming a scale no glance can exhaust.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

If you can watch a ruler’s actions, you can know the whole of his heart.

אֵין חֵקֶר

ʾên ḥēqer

GROWS FROM

חקר

ḥ-q-r

To search out, investigate, or probe.

“beyond searching” in this verse is ʾên ḥēqer. The phrase literally says there is no ⁨חֵקֶר⁩ (ḥēqer, search or inquiry) of the king’s heart. “Unsearchable” holds both the act of probing and the limit inquiry reaches: the inward life of a ruler is not exhausted by looking.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāqar: To search, investigate, probe.

חָקַר

Psalm 139:1 uses this verb for the LORD searching the speaker, showing the root can describe probing into a person’s inward life.

ḥēqer: Search, inquiry, investigation.

חֵקֶר

This noun names the inquiry that cannot exhaust the king’s heart here; Psalm 145:3 uses the same word to say the LORD’s greatness is unsearchable.

לֵב

lev

GROWS FROM

לבב

l-b-b

The inner center: heart, thought, intention, and judgment.

Here “heart” holds the king’s inward center, including what he intends and judges; the hiddenness is about thought and decision as well as feeling. The verse describes what cannot be fully searched within a ruler, not merely what is kept out of sight.

ALSO GROWS

lev: Heart, inner mind, intention.

לֵב

This is the form in the verse, placing the king’s inward thoughts and decisions beyond an observer’s full reach.

levav: Heart, inner self.

לְבָב

This related form also names the inward center, reinforcing that the verse concerns the person’s interior life, not just emotion.

Scripture repeatedly names realities whose depth cannot be exhausted by human inquiry.

Can you find God by searching? Can you find the Almighty to his limit?
Job 11:7 · SDVThe verse asks whether searching can reach the full measure of God.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness cannot be searched out.
Psalm 145:3 · SDVThe same Hebrew word ⁨חֵקֶר⁩ (ḥēqer, search or inquiry) marks a greatness no inquiry can exhaust.
O the depth of the riches of both wisdom and knowledge of God! How beyond searching out are his judgments, and how beyond tracking are his ways!
Romans 11:33 · SDVThe verse joins depth with what cannot be fully searched or traced.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, you probe me, and you perceive me.
Psalm 139:1 · SDV

Proverbs uses ⁨חֵקֶר⁩ (ḥēqer, search or inquiry) to describe the king’s heart as beyond exhaustive probing; Psalm 139 uses ⁨חָקַר⁩ (ḥāqar, to search or probe) when the speaker says the LORD has searched them. The shared root makes the reach and limits of searching the connection between the verses.
