This verse in the King James

King James wording
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

She does not judge her work from afar: she tastes its goodness, and that lived knowledge keeps a light burning through the night.

You know the goodness of your work by tasting what it yields; its value is experienced, not merely claimed. Your lamp remains lit through the night, holding the image of a light that continues after daylight ends.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This verse undoes the belief that night means the light has failed: her lamp remains lit there.

טָעֲמָה

ṭāʿămāh

GROWS FROM

טעם

To taste; from physical tasting, the root extends to discerning or experiencing.

The Hebrew verb makes her perception something lived: she tastes and knows that her gain is good. As in the verse that says to taste and see that the LORD is good, goodness here is recognized through experience, not merely asserted.

ALSO GROWS

ṭāʿam: To taste or experience directly.

טָעַם

It reveals the sensory force behind “perceiveth”: she knows the goodness of her work by experiencing its fruit.

ṭaʿam: Taste, and by extension judgment or discernment.

טַעַם

The same root connects sensory experience with sound judgment: her discernment grows from what she has tasted.

סַחְרָהּ

sāḥrāh

GROWS FROM

סחר

To go around or circulate in trade; to engage in commerce.

The word for her merchandise belongs to a root of circulation and exchange. Her work’s goodness appears in what moves through her trade and returns as value, while the next image shows her light enduring into the night.

ALSO GROWS

sōḥēr: A trader or merchant.

סֹחֵר

The merchant branch places her good merchandise within a living practice of exchange.

səḥōrāh: Goods or commerce.

סְחוֹרָה

This branch makes clear that what she tastes as good is the value of her work in circulation.

Wisdom’s light is carried, supplied, and kept available when darkness comes.

And before the lamp of God was quenched in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, Samuel lay down to sleep.
1 Samuel 3:3 · SDVThe lamp remains burning into the night, marking a light still present as sleep and darkness gather.
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 · SDVThe lamp gives light for the path ahead, making guidance available as one moves forward.
But the wise took oil in their vessels along with their lamps.
Matthew 25:4 · SDVThe wise carry what keeps their lamps ready, so their light can endure when the night arrives.
O taste and see that the LORD is good. Flourishing is the strong one who takes shelter in him.
Psalm 34:8 · SDV

The Hebrew verb translated “perceiveth” shares its root with “taste” here. Both verses make goodness something known through experience: Proverbs applies that tasted knowing to the value of her work.
