This verse in the King James

King James wording
By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

A just decree is wisdom engraved into public life, and rulers depend on wisdom before they can rule.

Wisdom is at work in the authority that governs your life: rulers reign through it, and those who decide what is just depend on it. Justice is not made sound by office alone; its measure comes from wisdom.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that power can certify its own justice: authority depends on wisdom before it can rightly judge.

יְחֹקְקוּ

yeḥoqequ

GROWS FROM

חקק

ḥ-q-q

to cut, engrave, or inscribe

“carve out” in this verse is yeḥoqequ. The verb for a ruler’s decree grows from cutting or engraving: justice is marked into shared order. Wisdom supplies the measure that keeps this inscription just.

ALSO GROWS

ḥoq: statute; prescribed measure

חֹק

A decree takes lasting form as a statute, an order marked out for a community.

ḥuqqah: ordinance; prescribed practice

חֻקָּה

This branch shows how what is inscribed can shape a community’s repeated practices.

צֶדֶק

tsedeq

GROWS FROM

צדק

ṣ-d-q

alignment; being set right

“alignment” in this verse is tsedeq. Justice and righteousness are branches of one root, linking public judgment with a life aligned to what is right. Wisdom holds both within the same measure.

ALSO GROWS

tsedaqah: righteousness; alignment

צְדָקָה

This related form shows that the justice rulers decree and the righteousness a person lives belong to one word-family.

tsaddiq: a righteous or aligned person

צַדִּיק

The root also describes a person, connecting just decisions with the people who are set right by them.

יִמְלֹכוּ

yimlōkhu

GROWS FROM

מלך

m-l-k

to rule as king

The same root names the king, the act of reigning, and the realm of rule. By saying that kings reign through wisdom, the verse places wisdom beneath the office, its action, and its domain.

ALSO GROWS

melekh: king

מֶלֶךְ

The ruler’s title shares its root with the act of reigning.

mamlakhah: kingdom; realm

מַמְלָכָה

The root extends from the ruler’s action to the whole realm shaped by that rule.

Judgment takes its measure from wisdom and alignment, rather than from power alone.

A Psalm for Solomon. Give the king your judgments, O God, and your alignment to the king's son.
Psalm 72:1 · SDVThe king’s ability to judge rightly is received as a measure from beyond the office itself.
But he will judge the bent low with alignment, and reprove with straightness the bowed ones of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the restless.
Isaiah 11:4 · SDVRighteousness and equity shape judgment, showing authority measured by alignment.
But the wisdom that is from above is first set apart, then whole, gentle, and easy to yield to, full of faithful love and good fruits, undivided, and without a mask.
James 3:17 · SDVWisdom carries qualities that make judgment free from partiality and hypocrisy.
I walk the way of alignment, in the midst of the trodden paths of judgment.
Proverbs 8:20 · SDV

The same ⁨צדק⁩ (ṣ-d-q) root appears here as “righteousness” where Proverbs 8:15 has “justice,” joining public decisions with the path wisdom itself takes. The decree in this verse is one public expression of that wider alignment.
