King James wording
King James Version
When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:THE KEY
The clouds above and the springs below are each made strong, showing creation held firm at both its heights and its depths.
THE MEANING
The clouds above you and the deep beneath you belong to one ordered creation. The same divine strength makes both firm, so what lies hidden below is held within that order too.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the hidden depths lie outside divine order.
THE ROOT
אַמְּצוֹ
ammətsō
GROWS FROM
אמץ
Be firm or strong; strengthen.
“firms” in this verse is ammətsō. The word translated “established” carries the sense of making strong. The first clause already describes strength, linking the clouds’ stability with the strengthening named in the next clause.
ALSO GROWS
ammēts: Strengthen, make firm.
אַמֵּץ
This verb makes explicit the firmness beneath “established.”
ōmets: Strength, courage, firmness.
אֹמֶץ
The same root can name the quality that lets something stand firm.
עֲזוֹז
ʿazoz
GROWS FROM
עזז
Be strong or mighty; prevail.
“grow strong” in this verse is ʿazoz. This second clause uses another strength-root. The verse sets the clouds above and the springs of the deep in parallel: both are made firm by strength.
ALSO GROWS
ʿazuz: Mighty, strong.
עָזוּז
This form describes the might expressed in the clause.
ʿoz: Strength, might.
עֹז
The branch names the force that the verse shows making the deep’s springs strong.
עֵינוֹת
ʿēnōt
GROWS FROM
עין
Eye; also a spring or source.
“eyes” in this verse is ʿēnōt. The Hebrew word for a spring is also the word for an eye. The fountains are the deep’s outlets, the places where hidden waters emerge into view.
ALSO GROWS
ʿayin: Eye.
עַיִן
This is the same Hebrew noun used for the visible organ of sight.
maʿyan: Spring, fountain.
מַעְיָן
This related word names a water source, echoing the springs that rise from the deep.
THE PATTERN
The created world holds its boundaries because divine strength makes its heights and depths firm.
And God made the expanse, and parted the waters beneath the expanse from the waters above the expanse, and it was so.And said, This far shall you come, but no further, and here shall your swelling waves be held? For they wish this to escape them, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth set together out of water and through water.THE THREAD
Hold fast, and let your heart be firm, all who wait for the LORD.The word translated “established” here comes from אמץ, the same root as “strengthen” in this psalm. One root describes firmness in the skies and springs, and the other verse applies that same language to the heart.
