This verse in the King James

King James wording
But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

What God delights in does not remain a wish: the verse joins his desire directly to what he does.

The verse joins God’s nearness, he is named as ours, with his active freedom in the heavens. What he desires, he does; his delight takes the form of action now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the picture of God as a passive image whose agency depends on human hands, a contrast the surrounding psalm makes explicit.

חָפֵץ

ḥāphēṣ

GROWS FROM

חפץ

ḥ-p-ṣ

To desire, delight in, or take pleasure in.

“delights in” in this verse is ḥāphēṣ. The verse places ⁨חָפֵץ⁩ (ḥāphēṣ, “desires” or “takes pleasure”) beside ⁨עָשָׂה⁩ (ʿāśâ, “does” or “makes”). That pairing presents God’s delight as effective action, not an inward wish left unrealized.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāphēṣ: To desire or take pleasure in.

חָפֵץ

This is the verb in the verse: what God takes pleasure in is what he does.

ḥēpheṣ: Delight, desire, pleasure; also a matter or undertaking.

חֵפֶץ

The same root can name both desire and a matter or undertaking, echoing the verse’s movement from what God desires to what he does.

God’s desire becomes action; what he purposes is effective, not merely inward.

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient days the things not yet made, saying, My counsel will stand, and all that I delight in I will make.
Isaiah 46:10 · SDVThe same root for pleasure appears as God declares that his counsel stands and that he will do what he desires.
Whatever the LORD delights in, he does in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the depths.
Psalm 135:6 · SDVThis verse likewise joins what the LORD desires with what he does, extending that action across all creation.
In him we also have been allotted an inheritance, marked out beforehand according to the aim of him who works all things according to the counsel of his own will.
Ephesians 1:11 · SDVThe same pattern appears in the claim that God’s purpose and will are at work in what comes to pass.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient days the things not yet made, saying, My counsel will stand, and all that I delight in I will make.
Isaiah 46:10 · SDV

Isaiah uses the same root, ⁨חֵפֶץ⁩ (ḥēpheṣ, “pleasure” or “desire”), in the phrase “I will do all my pleasure.” It deepens this verse by joining God’s desire to counsel that stands from beginning to end.
