This verse in the King James

King James wording
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

Heaven above and Sheol below both fall inside the same unbroken presence.

Your highest ascent and lowest descent both meet the same God, already present. Even the place where you spread out a bed in Sheol is not beyond that presence. The verse makes no exception for the depth you cannot climb out of.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that your lowest place, especially the place that feels like an ending, is where God’s presence stops.

וְאַצִּיעָה

ve’atsia

GROWS FROM

יצע

y-ts-ʿ

to spread out, furnish a place to lie

“spread my bed” in this verse is ve’atsia. The verb translated “make my bed” carries the sense of spreading out a place to lie. A related form can mean a side chamber, so the verse presents Sheol not as a blank point on a map but as a place where the speaker can rest, and even that place is within God’s presence.

ALSO GROWS

yāṣaʿ: to spread out or make a bed

יָצַע

This is the action in the verse: the speaker lays out a resting place even in Sheol.

yetsuaʿ: side chamber, adjoining room

יְצוּעַ

The same root can name a space within a larger dwelling, echoing how even the speaker’s resting place remains within God’s reach.

No vertical extreme, height or depth, places the reader beyond God’s presence.

Even though I walk through the valley of deepest darkness, I do not fear harm, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 · SDVThe presence named in the heights and depths of Psalm 139 is also with the reader in the valley of death’s shadow.
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Jesus the Anointed One, our Lord.
Romans 8:39 · SDVHeight and depth again mark the extremes that cannot separate the reader from God’s love.
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Jesus the Anointed One, our Lord.
Romans 8:39 · SDV

Psalm 139 says God is present at both extremes; Romans names those same extremes as unable to separate you from God’s love. Together, the verses make the full span, height and depth, part of one unbroken relationship.
