This verse in the King James

King James wording
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

Your boundary cord is the inheritance taking shape as a place you can inhabit.

Your share is pictured with real edges, and those edges fall in pleasantness. The inheritance resting upon you is called goodly, so the verse speaks of belonging as a portion whose shape is already beautiful.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that every limit means you have been given less; here the line marks a pleasant place and a good inheritance.

חֲבָלִים

ḥăḇālîm

GROWS FROM

חבל

ḥ-b-l

Cord; a line used to measure or mark out a portion.

The Hebrew pictures cords falling to you, and ⁨חֶבֶל⁩ can name both a cord and the tract measured by it. The boundary is already the shape of the allotted share: the line and the inheritance meet in one image.

ALSO GROWS

ḥeḇel: Cord, rope

חֶבֶל

This is the literal cord pictured by the verse’s “lines.”

ḥeḇel: Measured tract, allotted region

חֶבֶל

The same word can name the land measured by the cord, joining the boundary to the portion it marks.

נָפְלוּ

nāfəlû

GROWS FROM

נפל

n-p-l

To fall, descend, or land.

“fall” in this verse is nāfəlû. The verb pictures the allotted boundary arriving as something that falls to you. Psalm 78:55 uses the causative form of this same root for dividing an inheritance by line, making the image of an assigned share explicit.

ALSO GROWS

nāphal: To fall or land

נָפַל

The verse says the cords themselves have landed to you.

hippîl: To cause to fall, cast down

הִפִּיל

This causative form appears in Psalm 78:55 as land is assigned by measuring line.

A portion becomes inhabitable through the boundaries that allot and hold its place.

He drove out the nations before them, and let an inheritance fall to them by the measuring cord, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
Psalm 78:55 · SDVThe inheritance is measured by line, joining the boundary directly to the portion received.
For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance.
Deuteronomy 32:9 · SDVThe verse describes belonging through the language of a portion and an allotted lot.
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.
Acts 17:26 · SDVThe bounds of habitation appear as part of the shape given to where people dwell.
He drove out the nations before them, and let an inheritance fall to them by the measuring cord, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
Psalm 78:55 · SDV

Psalm 78:55 uses the same Hebrew roots for falling and cord: the inheritance is made to fall to the tribes by measuring line. That makes the cords in Psalm 16 more than boundaries; they are the means by which a share takes shape as someone’s inheritance.
