King James wording
King James Version
But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.THE KEY
Your first trust is not self-generated: it is formed while you are still being held and fed.
THE MEANING
Your capacity to trust begins before you can name trust: you are brought through birth and made secure while still nursing. The One who carries you through the womb sustains you at your mother’s breast, and that beginning remains part of your life now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that trust begins only when you can stand on your own; here, reliance is already being formed while you are held and fed.
THE ROOT
מַבְטִיחִי
mavtiḥi
GROWS FROM
בטח
To trust, rely on, or feel secure.
“make me lean” in this verse is mavtiḥi. English “hope” can sound like wishing for a future outcome, but this word comes from the language of trusting and being secure. The verse locates that trust in your earliest dependence: before you can produce it for yourself, you are being sustained.
ALSO GROWS
mivtaḥ: Refuge, security
מִבְטָח
Trust and refuge share the same root: the one you rely on becomes the place where you are secure.
beṭaḥ: Securely, in safety
בֶּטַח
The root also describes being safely held, echoing the infant’s dependence in the verse.
THE PATTERN
Trust begins and continues through care received before self-sufficiency is possible.
Upon you I am propped from the womb; you draw me out of my mother's belly. In you is my praise, always.Hear and respond to me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who are lifted by me from the belly, who are borne from the womb.Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?THE THREAD
Upon you I am propped from the womb; you draw me out of my mother's belly. In you is my praise, always.Psalm 71:6 echoes the womb and birth, and says reliance has been present from that beginning. Together, the verses show trust as a relationship already carrying you before you can stand on your own.
