This verse in the King James

King James wording
I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.

The verse’s hidden hinge is ⁨סָמַךְ⁩ (samak, “to support”): you remain held even when awareness lets go.

You lie down and lose conscious command of the night, yet support continues through the gap. Waking arrives as part of that same holding, not proof that you managed to keep yourself safe.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that your safety depends on staying alert and holding every part of life together.

יִסְמְכֵנִי

yismecheni

GROWS FROM

סמך

To lean on, support, or uphold.

“bears my weight” in this verse is yismecheni. The verse does not say sleep is protected by the sleeper’s awareness; it says the LORD supports the one who has laid down. The same root appears in Isaiah’s “mind is stayed,” linking rest and waking as two experiences of being held, not achievements of vigilance.

ALSO GROWS

sōmēkh: One who supports; a supporter.

סוֹמֵךְ

This form makes support an active presence, continuing through the sleeper’s loss of awareness.

sāmūkh: Supported; resting upon.

סָמוּךְ

This form appears in Isaiah 26:3 for the mind “stayed” on God, connecting inward steadiness with being upheld.

Life remains upheld through the moments a person cannot secure by vigilance alone.

Though he falls, he will not be hurled down, for the LORD props him up with his hand.
Psalm 37:24 · SDVThe same root ⁨סמך⁩ (samak, “support, uphold”) names support that holds even through a fall.
The ancient God is your dwelling, and underneath are the arms of the ages. He drives the enemy from your face, and he says, Destroy.
Deuteronomy 33:27 · SDVThe image of arms underneath shows life held by support beyond what the person can hold alone.
Who, being the radiance of his weight and the exact stamp of his foundation, carrying all things by the word of his power, when he had made the cleansing of shortcomings, sat down at the right hand of the Greatness on high.
Hebrews 1:3 · SDVThe support that carries a sleeper through the night is described here as upholding all things.
You will keep in wholeness upon wholeness the one whose shaped mind rests upon you, for in you he leans his full weight.
Isaiah 26:3 · SDV

The word behind “stayed” is ⁨סָמוּךְ⁩ (sāmūkh, “supported, resting upon”), from ⁨סמך⁩ (samak, “to support, uphold”), the same root as “sustained” here. Isaiah shows that support as inner steadiness; this verse shows it holding you through sleep.
