King James wording
King James Version
From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root names both God’s dwelling and earth’s dwellers: from his dwelling, he sees every dweller.
THE MEANING
God sees every person inhabiting the earth from his own dwelling. The shared root joins the place from which he looks to the people he sees, holding divine attention and ordinary human life within one frame.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that your life is too ordinary or too remote to be seen dissolves here: every earth-dweller lies within his gaze.
THE ROOT
שִׁבְתוֹ
shivto
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ב
To sit, remain, or dwell.
“who settle on” in this verse is shivto. The verse uses forms from one root twice: God is seen from his own dwelling, while the earth is filled with dwellers. English presents these as separate ideas; Hebrew makes them echo each other, placing every inhabitant within the scope of his seeing.
ALSO GROWS
yoshev: One who sits or dwells.
יֹשֵׁב
The inhabitants in this verse are dwellers; the word names their settled presence on the earth.
moshav: A seat, dwelling, or settlement.
מוֹשָׁב
This branch carries the same root from the people who dwell to the places where dwelling happens, echoing the verse’s movement from God’s habitation to earth’s inhabitants.
THE PATTERN
God’s sight reaches every human life, from the heavens to the smallest detail.
The LORD leans down from the heavens upon the children of humankind, to see whether any who understand are seeking God.The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the harm and the good. And no creation is hidden before him, but all things are naked and bared at the throat to the eyes of him to whom our account belongs.THE THREAD
You perceive my sitting and my rising, and from afar you separate out my thought. The Hebrew behind “downsitting” is שִׁבְתִּי (shivti, my sitting), from יָשַׁב (yashav, sit or dwell), the same root joining God’s habitation and earth’s inhabitants here. Psalm 33 holds every earth-dweller within his sight; Psalm 139 brings that knowing close to one person’s ordinary movements, even from afar.
