This verse in the King James

King James wording
A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

A small share held in alignment outweighs the noisy multitude of riches held among the wicked.

Your possessions do not establish your worth by their quantity: a little held within an aligned life is better than abundance held among the wicked. The word translated “riches” also carries the sense of a multitude, so the verse weighs an aligned life against sheer plenty.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that wealth proves a life is good, while having little makes that life deficient.

צַדִּיק

tsaddiq

GROWS FROM

צדק

ts-d-q

To be right or just; rightness and alignment.

“aligned one” in this verse is tsaddiq. “Righteous” is ⁨צַדִּיק⁩ (tsaddiq, one who is just or aligned), from ⁨צדק⁩ (ts-d-q, rightness or alignment). Its branch ⁨צְדָקָה⁩ (tsedaqah, righteousness or justice) shows that the comparison concerns the character of the life holding the little, not the size of the possession.

ALSO GROWS

tsedeq: Rightness, justice, alignment.

צֶדֶק

This branch makes the verse’s measure clear: the little is valuable within a life oriented toward what is right.

tsedaqah: Righteousness, justice, right conduct.

צְדָקָה

It shares the same root as “righteous,” linking a person’s alignment to the way that alignment takes shape in life.

הֲמוֹן

hamon

GROWS FROM

המה

h-m-h

To murmur, roar, or surge in tumult.

“Riches” translates ⁨הֲמוֹן⁩ (hamon, multitude or abundance), a noun linked to ⁨הָמָה⁩ (hamah, to roar or surge). The verse sets a small amount against a mass that feels like a crowd in motion; sheer scale does not make that multitude the better thing.

ALSO GROWS

hamah: To roar, murmur, or surge.

הָמָה

The sound and motion in this branch add a sense of clamoring multitude to the abundance contrasted with the righteous person’s little.

hamon: Multitude, tumult, or abundance.

הֲמוֹן

This is the word translated “riches” here, emphasizing the quantity of what is held rather than its quality.

The worth of what is possessed is measured by the life and character it serves, not by its quantity.

Better is little with awe of the LORD than great treasure and tumult in it.
Proverbs 15:16 · SDVA small amount joined to reverence is better than great treasure accompanied by trouble.
And he said to them, Watch, and guard yourselves against grasping, for a person's life does not lie in the overflow of what they hold.
Luke 12:15 · SDVA person’s life is not defined by the abundance of what they possess.
But godliness with enough within is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6 · SDVA life shaped by godliness and contentment is itself called great gain.
Better is a little with alignment than a great harvest without judgment.
Proverbs 16:8 · SDV

Psalm’s “righteous” is ⁨צַדִּיק⁩ (tsaddiq, one who is just or aligned); Proverbs’ “righteousness” is ⁨צְדָקָה⁩ (tsedaqah, rightness or justice). Both grow from ⁨צדק⁩ (ts-d-q, rightness or alignment), and Proverbs echoes the same little-versus-great contrast, placing the weight on the character of what is held.
