This verse in the King James

King James wording
He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

The promise is not that you never shake, but that refuge keeps the shaking from becoming ruin.

Your steadiness does not come from being unshakable by yourself. The one you lean on is rock, deliverance, and high refuge, so pressure may move you without carrying you away. “Not greatly moved” leaves room for real shaking while naming its limit.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being shaken means your refuge has failed: the verse makes room for movement while denying movement the last word.

מִשְׂגַּבִּי

misgabi

GROWS FROM

שגב

To be high, elevated, or inaccessible.

“high place” in this verse is misgabi. The word rendered “defence” carries the image of a high refuge, a place beyond the reach of what threatens you. The verse describes safety as being held above danger, even while shaking remains possible.

ALSO GROWS

sagav: To be high or inaccessible

שָׂגַב

This verb reveals the height inside the image of refuge.

misgav: A high refuge or stronghold

מִשְׂגָּב

This is the noun-form behind “my defence”: protection as a place of safety.

nisgav: High or exalted

נִשְׂגָּב

This branch echoes the elevation that makes the refuge secure.

יְשׁוּעָתִי

yeshuati

GROWS FROM

ישע

To deliver or bring out of danger.

The word names deliverance as movement out of danger and into room to live. The same root is carried in ⁨יֵשׁוּעַ⁩ (Yeshua), whose name holds deliverance as nature.

ALSO GROWS

yasha: To deliver or rescue

יָשַׁע

The verb shows that deliverance is an action, not merely an idea.

moshia: A deliverer

מוֹשִׁיעַ

This branch names the one who brings the threatened person out.

yeshuah: Deliverance

יְשׁוּעָה

This is the noun behind “my salvation,” joining rescue to the rock and high refuge.

Refuge holds through pressure, so steadiness does not depend on pressure disappearing.

He is the Rock; whole is his work, for all his ways are judgment. A God of steadiness, without crookedness, aligned and straight is he.
Deuteronomy 32:4 · SDVThe image of the Rock names a steadiness that holds beyond the reader’s changing ground.
To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a help found very near in the narrow place.
Psalm 46:1 · SDVRefuge is present inside trouble, not only after trouble has passed.
And the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds breathed and fell against that house, and it did not fall, for it had been laid on the rock.
Matthew 7:25 · SDVThe house remains standing while forces strike it because its foundation holds.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I shelter; my shield, and the horn of my deliverance, and my high place.
Psalm 18:2 · SDV

The Hebrew gathers rock, deliverance, and high refuge together here as it does in Psalm 62:2. That shared cluster opens “not greatly moved” as a bounded shaking: danger may strike, while refuge holds.
