This verse in the King James

King James wording
For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

The verse turns promotion from a place you reach into a lifting no horizon can give.

Your rise is not secured by the direction you face or the place you occupy; no horizon manufactures it. The lifting belongs to the judge who brings one low and raises another.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that finding the right place or direction can secure your rise.

הָרִים

hārîm

GROWS FROM

רוּם

rûm

to rise or be high; to raise or lift up

“the lifting” in this verse is hārîm. The Hebrew root gives “promotion” the concrete image of being lifted high. The next verse uses the same root for the judge who “setteth up” one person, showing that elevation is received, not produced by standing in the right direction.

ALSO GROWS

yārîm: he lifts or raises

יָרִים

The same root names the raising in the next verse, which identifies the source of the lifting described here.

mārôm: height; a high place

מָרוֹם

This branch keeps the image spatial: promotion is a rise to height, not merely a change in title.

Elevation is given by the one who rules over human reversals, rather than secured through status or position.

The LORD strips, and makes rich; he lays low, and lifts high.
1 Samuel 2:7 · SDVThe same pattern holds both lowering and lifting within the LORD’s power.
He has pulled the mighty down from their seats, and lifted up the low.
Luke 1:52 · SDVThe verse shows human rank reversing as the low are raised and the mighty brought down.
And he changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and raises up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who know understanding.
Daniel 2:21 · SDVEven kingship is subject to the one who removes rulers and sets them up.
For God is the judge. This one he brings low, and this one he lifts.
Psalm 75:7 · SDV

“Setteth up” comes from the same root, ⁨רוּם⁩ (rûm), as the lifting in “promotion.” The next verse names who does that lifting: God, who brings one down and raises another.
