This verse in the King James

King James wording
Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.

The valley of tears becomes the very place where a spring is set.

You pass through a place marked by tears, and a spring is set there as you go. Rain fills its pools; the valley holds water even while it remains a valley of sorrow.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a sorrowful passage can only leave you empty: here, a spring appears within the valley itself.

בָּכָא

Bākāʾ

GROWS FROM

בכה

b-k-h

To weep. The place name echoes ⁨בָּכָה⁩ (bākâ), meaning “to weep,” though Baca may also be read as a proper place name.

“valley of weeping” in this verse is Bākāʾ. The name holds the sound of weeping inside the landscape. As you pass through this valley, the verse says a spring is set there; the tears mark the place where water appears.

ALSO GROWS

bākâ: To weep

בָּכָה

This verb gives the valley’s name its resonance with crying.

bekhî: Weeping

בְּכִי

This noun makes the valley’s grief audible in the same word family.

מַעְיָן

Maʿyan

GROWS FROM

עין

ʿ-y-n

The word family of ⁨עַיִן⁩ (ʿayin), “eye,” also names a spring or fountain: a source of water.

“make it a spring” in this verse is Maʿyan. The Hebrew word rendered “well” is a spring or fountain, a source that rises into view. The valley does not merely collect rain from above; a source is set within it.

ALSO GROWS

ʿayin: Eye; also a spring or source

עַיִן

The shared word family connects a visible opening with a source of water.

maʿyan: Spring, fountain

מַעְיָן

This is the source-word used for the well set in the valley.

A passage through sorrow or dry ground can become the place where life springs up.

Those who sow in tears reap in a ringing cry.
Psalm 126:5 · SDVTears are present in the passage, yet they become the ground from which joy is gathered.
Behold, I am making a new thing; now it sprouts; will you not perceive it? I will even lay a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the parched land.
Isaiah 43:19 · SDVA way opens through wilderness, and water appears in the desert.
But whoever drinks of the water I give never thirsts into the ages; the water I give becomes in him a spring of water leaping up into the life of the ages.
John 4:14 · SDVThe source becomes a spring rising within the person who receives the water.
Then with leaping you will draw waters out of the springs of deliverance.
Isaiah 12:3 · SDV

The word translated “wells” belongs to the same spring-word family as ⁨מַעְיָן⁩ (maʿyan, spring or fountain) in this verse. Isaiah joins that source with joy and deliverance, deepening the image of water rising in the valley of tears.
