This verse in the King James

King James wording
To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

The rock beneath you is uprightness made dependable: its strength carries no hidden crookedness.

The LORD meets you now as uprightness and as a rock beneath your feet. The same presence that steadies you carries no injustice within it; dependability and rightness are not split apart.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the suspicion that God’s strength might conceal injustice: the verse places firmness and uprightness in the same nature.

יָשָׁר

yāšār

GROWS FROM

ישר

To be straight, level, or direct.

“Upright” carries the sense of being straight or level, so the LORD’s character is pictured as a way without distortion. Set beside “my rock,” that straightness is dependable ground: the one who holds you steady is not bent toward injustice.

ALSO GROWS

yosher: Uprightness, integrity.

יֹשֶׁר

It shows that straightness describes character as well as direction.

mishor: Level ground or a plain.

מִישׁוֹר

It gives uprightness a landscape: a level place where the way is not warped.

yeyasher: To make straight or direct.

יְיַשֵּׁר

It carries the same root into the act of straightening a path.

עַוְלָתָה

ʿawlāṯāh

GROWS FROM

עול

To act unjustly or do wrong; the noun names injustice or wrongdoing.

“crookedness” in this verse is ʿawlāṯāh. The verse names what is absent from the rock: injustice. Beside “upright,” the word sharpens the image into a contrast between what is straight and what acts unjustly.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāwel: Wrong or injustice.

עָוֶל

It names the injustice the verse says is not in the LORD.

ʿāwal: To act unjustly or do wrong.

עָוַל

It shows the root as an action, not only a condition: no unjust dealing belongs to this foundation.

The LORD’s upright character gives both a level way and a foundation without injustice.

Good and straight is the LORD. Therefore he aims those who miss the mark down the way.
Psalm 25:8 · SDVThe same uprightness appears as guidance along a way.
In all your ways, perceive him, and he straightens your paths.
Proverbs 3:6 · SDVThe language of directing paths echoes the movement from what is crooked toward what is straight.
And all drank the same breath-given drink, for they drank from the breath-given rock that followed them, and that rock was the Anointed One.
1 Corinthians 10:4 · SDVThe rock image recurs as a sustaining foundation, carrying the other side of the verse’s pairing.
He is the Rock; whole is his work, for all his ways are judgment. A God of steadiness, without crookedness, aligned and straight is he.
Deuteronomy 32:4 · SDV

Deuteronomy 32:4 folds the same claims together: Rock, no iniquity, and rightness. Its word ⁨צוּר⁩ (ṣûr, “rock”) matches the rock image here, while “without iniquity” and “right” echo this verse’s assurance that the One who is upright holds no injustice.
