This verse in the King James

King James wording
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

The hills do not merely shake before the LORD; they lose their shape like wax before the face of the Lord of the whole earth.

What feels massive and immovable is not the final measure of reality: before the LORD, even the hills soften and flow like wax. The one before whom they melt is Lord of the whole earth, so no part of the world lies beyond that presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that what looks permanent or overwhelmingly strong cannot change; even the hills lose their form before the LORD.

nāmassû

GROWS FROM

מ־ס־ס

m-s-s

Melt, dissolve, lose cohesion.

“melt” in this verse is nāmassû. The Hebrew verb pictures more than a shake or a defeat: the hills lose the solidity that makes them seem immovable. The same root can describe a heart melting, carrying the image from the landscape into the inner life.

ALSO GROWS

wayyimmās: And it melted; became soft or dissolved.

וַיִּמַּס

In Joshua 2:11 the same root describes hearts melting, showing that the image reaches inward as well as across the landscape.

wenāmās: And he melted away.

וְנָמָס

In Psalm 112:10 the same root describes the wicked melting away, extending the image from hills and hearts to a person losing firmness.

The nations roar, the kingdoms totter; he gives his voice, and the earth melts.
Psalm 46:6 · SDVThe earth itself loses its solidity when the LORD speaks.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt, and the earth heaves up before his face, the world and all who settle in it.
Nahum 1:5 · SDVMountains, hills, earth, and all who dwell there are swept into the same response to his presence.
And I see a great white throne, and the one who sits on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven flee away, and no place is found for them.
Revelation 20:11 · SDVEven earth and heaven flee from the face of the one seated on the throne.
And when we heard these things, our hearts melted, and no breath stood up any longer in any man from your face. For the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
Joshua 2:11 · SDV

The root ⁨מ־ס־ס⁩ (m-s-s), meaning “melt” or “dissolve,” describes both hearts melting here and hills melting in Psalm 97:5. The scale shifts from the inner life to the landscape, but the same apparent firmness gives way before the LORD recognized as God over heaven and earth.
