This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

The verse makes silence part of revelation: the thunder is heard, but its words are deliberately kept out of the written record.

A voice can reach you without becoming something you may set down for others. The thunders have spoken, and the command holds their words within a boundary: seal them, do not write them. That limit is part of what is revealed; not every heard thing becomes a written message.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that anything significant you hear must be captured, explained, or shared.

σφράγισον

sphragison

GROWS FROM

σφραγ-

sphrag-

To seal or close with a seal.

“seal up” in this verse is sphragison. The word carries the concrete image of a seal closing and marking something as held. Here the thunders have already been heard, yet their words are placed beyond the written record: hearing and recording are not the same act.

ALSO GROWS

sphragis: A seal or signet

σφραγίς

The signet closes or marks what it touches, giving a physical shape to the boundary around the thunders’ words.

sphragizō: To seal, close, or mark with a seal

σφραγίζω

This verb names the act commanded here: the utterance is held back from written disclosure.

esphragisthēte: You were sealed

ἐσφραγίσθητε

The same word family can describe being marked and held as belonging; it shows that sealing can mark a boundary as well as close one.

A revealed word can carry a boundary around who may receive it, when it may be disclosed, and whether it may be spoken or written.

But you, Daniel, stop up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall multiply.
Daniel 12:4 · SDVThe command to seal what is written gives disclosure a boundary in time.
That he was caught up into the walled garden and heard unsayable words, which a human is not permitted to speak.
2 Corinthians 12:4 · SDVWhat is heard can remain beyond the permission to speak it.
And he says to me, Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the season is at hand.
Revelation 22:10 · SDVThe command reverses the seal when the time for disclosure has arrived.
And he says to me, Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the season is at hand.
Revelation 22:10 · SDV

The same Greek verb, ⁨σφραγίζω⁩ (sphragizō), governs both commands: here the words are sealed, while there the prophecy must remain unsealed. The changed command makes timing part of the meaning of the seal.
