This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

The command to “come up” and the report that they “ascended” use forms of the same Greek verb: the call is already shaped like the movement that follows.

A voice from heaven calls the addressed ones upward, and they rise into heaven in a cloud as their enemies watch. The same upward verb carries both the summons and the ascent: the word heard becomes the movement seen. Their enemies witness the rising, but do not direct it.

ἀνέβησαν

anebēsan

GROWS FROM

βαίνω

bainō

To go or step; with ⁨ἀνά⁩ (ana, up), it forms the verb for going up or ascending.

“ascended / Come up” in this verse is anebēsan. The summons ⁨ἀνάβατε⁩ (anabate, “come up”) and the ascent ⁨ἀνέβησαν⁩ (anebēsan, “they went up”) are forms of ⁨ἀναβαίνω⁩ (anabainō, “go up”). English separates invitation from response, while the Greek repeats one upward-moving verb: what they hear is precisely the movement they enter.

ALSO GROWS

anabainō: To go upward, ascend

ἀναβαίνω

This is the verb behind both the summons and the ascent in the verse.

katabainō: To move downward

καταβαίνω

The same root can mark movement in the opposite direction, making the upward direction of this passage explicit.

metabainō: To move from one place or state to another

μεταβαίνω

This branch keeps the root’s sense of movement in view: the verse describes a passage upward, not merely a change in what the enemies see.

A summons toward heaven opens an upward movement into divine presence.

And the LORD said to Moses, Come up to me into the mountain, and be there, and I will give you tablets of stone, and instruction, and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.
Exodus 24:12 · SDVThe upward summons opens a meeting with the LORD and the receiving of what is given there.
When he had said these things, while they watched, he was taken up, and a cloud took him up out of their sight.
Acts 1:9 · SDVThe ascent takes place before witnesses, and the cloud marks the point where it passes from their sight.
After this I look, and behold, a door stands open in heaven, and the first voice I hear, like a trumpet speaking with me, says, Come up here, and I will show you what must come to be after this.
Revelation 4:1 · SDVA voice calls upward through an opened way into heaven, where a new vision is revealed.
After this I look, and behold, a door stands open in heaven, and the first voice I hear, like a trumpet speaking with me, says, Come up here, and I will show you what must come to be after this.
Revelation 4:1 · SDV

The command “Come up hither” repeats the same Greek verb ⁨ἀναβαίνω⁩ (anabainō, “go up or ascend”) that forms both “Come up” and “ascended” in Revelation 11:12. In Revelation 4:1 the summons opens a vision; here the summons is followed by a visible ascent.
