This verse in the King James

King James wording
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

The witnesses are pictured as both the oil-bearing source and the lampstands that make light visible, standing before the ruler of the earth.

The witness in you is both living source and visible light, present before God and within the earth. What nourishes the testimony and what lets it be seen belong to the same picture.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that witness is only a public display: the visible light and the living source belong together.

ἐλαῖαι

elaiai

GROWS FROM

ἐλαι-

elai-

The Greek word-family for the olive and its oil.

“olive trees” in this verse is elaiai. English separates the tree from its oil, while Greek keeps them in one word-family. Beside Zechariah’s vision, the trees and lampstands form a single image: living source becoming visible light.

ALSO GROWS

elaion: olive oil

ἔλαιον

The oil is the tree’s yield, linking the living source to the light it can sustain.

elaiōn: olive grove

ἐλαιών

The grove names the trees collectively, echoing the image of a living source rather than a single object.

λυχνίαι

lychniai

GROWS FROM

λυχν-

lychn-

The Greek word-family for lamps and lampstands.

“lampstands” in this verse is lychniai. The image names the stands that bear the light, not just the light itself. The witness has a visible form through which its light reaches others.

ALSO GROWS

lychnos: lamp

λύχνος

The lamp is the light-bearing object held by the stand.

lychnia: lampstand

λυχνία

This is the singular form of the word used here, naming the stand that holds a lamp in view.

ἑστῶτες

hestōtes

GROWS FROM

⁨ἵστημι⁩ (histēmi), stem ⁨στη-⁩/⁨στα-⁩ (stē-/sta-)

To stand, set, or place.

The word carries more than location: its family links standing with being set in position and rising to stand. The witnesses are presented as remaining in place before God.

ALSO GROWS

anistēmi: rise, stand up

ἀνίστημι

The same word-family connects standing with rising into a visible position.

stasis: stance, position

στάσις

This branch makes the sense of standing as a held position explicit.

God’s witness is pictured as living nourishment that becomes visible light in God’s presence.

Then he said, These are the two sons of the oil, standing at the side of the Lord of all the earth.
Zechariah 4:14 · SDVThe two figures are named as anointed ones who stand before the ruler of the whole earth.
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I lean my weight on the faithful love of God for ages and ages.
Psalm 52:8 · SDVThe olive tree is a living image of trust and flourishing in God’s presence.
Nor do people kindle a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
Matthew 5:15 · SDVThe lampstand makes light visible to everyone in the house.
Then he said, These are the two sons of the oil, standing at the side of the Lord of all the earth.
Zechariah 4:14 · SDV

Zechariah pairs the two olive trees with lampstands and names the figures as anointed ones standing by the Lord of the whole earth. That image opens Revelation’s witnesses as oil-bearing testimony whose light stands in God’s presence.
