This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

The Greek summons the birds with the same word-family that names an assembly or synagogue, turning heaven into a congregation for a terrible feast.

You stand before an invitation to the birds, not a consoling banquet: the “supper of the great God” is a summons toward the aftermath of judgment. The next verse names kings, mighty men, and every rank as flesh for this feast, so human status offers no shelter from the scene. Its violence stays visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that rank makes a body untouchable is overturned: the next verse names kings and mighty men among the flesh for the birds.

συναχθήτε

synachthēte

GROWS FROM

⁨ἄγω⁩ (agō), joined with ⁨συν-⁩ (syn-)

⁨Ἄγω⁩ means bring or lead; ⁨συν-⁩ adds the sense of together, so ⁨συνάγω⁩ means bring together or assemble.

“gather yourselves together” in this verse is synachthēte. English “gather” hides the assembly-language inside this summons. The birds are called together as a congregation for the feast.

ALSO GROWS

synagōgē: Assembly; synagogue

συναγωγή

This word shares the ⁨συνάγω⁩ family, making the birds’ gathering sound like an assembly.

agōgē: Leading, guidance, or conduct

ἀγωγή

Its root keeps the sense of being led toward a place, as the birds are summoned to this feast.

ἄγγελος

angelos

GROWS FROM

ἀγγελ-

angel-

Messenger; one who carries an announcement.

The figure in the sun is a messenger whose loud voice makes the summons public. The word carries the act of announcing within the messenger’s name.

ALSO GROWS

angelia: Message or announcement

ἀγγελία

The messenger’s call is itself an announcement to all the birds.

angellō: Announce or report

ἀγγέλλω

This verb reveals the announcing work carried by the messenger’s word-family.

δεῖπνον

deipnon

GROWS FROM

δειπν-

deipn-

Meal; dining.

Supper belongs to a family about dining and sharing a meal. Here that familiar table language turns grim: the summoned guests are birds, and the next verse identifies the flesh before them.

ALSO GROWS

deipneō: Dine or take a meal

δειπνέω

The verb makes the supper an act of eating, whose terrible object is named in the following verse.

syndeipneō: Dine together

συνδειπνέω

Its shared-meal sense sharpens the reversal: the gathering is communal, but its guests are scavenging birds.

When judgment exposes the fallen, birds gather over bodies as a public sign that human power has ended.

And you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD. Speak to every winged bird and to every beast of the field, "Gather yourselves and come, and gather yourselves all around to my slaughter, which I slaughter for you, a great slaughter upon the mountains of Israel, that you may eat flesh and drink blood."
Ezekiel 39:17 · SDVBirds are summoned to a great sacrifice, where the exposed flesh makes judgment a visible feast.
Wherever the fallen body is, there the eagles are gathered together.
Matthew 24:28 · SDVThe gathering of birds over a body marks where judgment has fallen.
So that you may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of commanders, and the flesh of the strong ones, and the flesh of horses, and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all, both the free and the servants, both small and great.
Revelation 19:18 · SDVThe next verse makes the feast’s outcome explicit and places every rank among the bodies exposed.
Ezekiel 39:17 · SDV

Ezekiel also summons birds to a feast, calls it a sacrifice, and names the flesh-and-blood outcome. Revelation reuses that prophetic architecture, so its birds’ invitation carries the weight of judgment rather than ordinary hospitality.
