What Does Revelation 20:4 Mean?

And I see thrones, and they sit upon them, and judgment is placed in their hands. I see the living souls of those struck down by the axe for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God, those who do not bow down before the beast or his image, nor take his engraving upon their foreheads or in their hands. They live and reign with the Anointed One for a thousand years.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

The ones the beast beheads are the ones the vision shows alive, entrusted with judgment, and reigning with Christ.

The vision names those cut down for their witness as still present before God: judgment is given to them, and they live and reign with Christ. Their refusal of the beast’s worship and mark remains visible beside their testimony. The verse holds violent death and continuing authority in the same frame.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that the power that kills has the final word: the beheaded are shown alive and reigning.

κρίμα

krima

GROWS FROM

κρι

To separate or distinguish, and so to decide or judge.

The Greek word for judgment belongs to a family built around discernment and decision. Here, judgment is given to the very people whose witness the beast meets with violence: they receive authority within the vision.

ALSO GROWS

krinō: To distinguish, decide, or judge.

κρίνω

This verb shares the ⁨κρ⁩ stem and shows the action beneath the judgment given to them.

krisis: Judgment or decision.

κρίσις

Its shared ⁨κρ⁩ stem keeps judgment connected to the act of deciding.

kritēs: A judge.

κριτής

This related word names the one who exercises judgment, making the authority entrusted to them more visible.

ψυχάς

psychas

GROWS FROM

ψυχ

The living self or soul.

“living souls” in this verse is psychas. The word holds the whole living self: these are the persons who bear witness and refuse the beast, not a detachable part of them. The vision then says they live and reign, keeping their personhood intact through death.

ALSO GROWS

psychē: Living soul or self.

ψυχή

This is the singular form of the word used for the slain, preserving the sense of a whole living person.

psychikos: Pertaining to the natural or living self.

ψυχικός

This related form shows the same ⁨ψυχ⁩ word family reaching into descriptions of embodied human life.

μαρτυρίαν

marturian

GROWS FROM

μαρτυ

Witness or testimony.

The Greek word family joins the testimony to the person who bears it. In this verse, witness is not an abstract claim: it remains bound to the people whose lives are taken for it.

ALSO GROWS

martys: A witness.

μάρτυς

This shares the ⁨μαρτυ⁩ word family and names the person who bears the testimony.

martyreō: To testify or bear witness.

μαρτυρέω

This verb shows the testimony as something a person does and lives out.

Violence against faithful witnesses does not hold the final authority over their life or rule.

Until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given to the set-apart ones of the Uplifted One. And the time reached, and the set-apart ones possessed the kingdom.
Daniel 7:22 · SDVJudgment is given to the faithful, and they come into possession of the kingdom.
And when he opens the fifth seal, I see beneath the altar the living souls of those slaughtered for the word of God and for the witness they held.
Revelation 6:9 · SDVThe slain remain seen as whole persons whose lives are joined to their witness.
Flourishing are the pursued for the sake of alignment, for theirs is the governance of the heavens.
Matthew 5:10 · SDVPersecution does not erase the persecuted; the kingdom belongs to them.
And when he opens the fifth seal, I see beneath the altar the living souls of those slaughtered for the word of God and for the witness they held.
Revelation 6:9 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨ψυχή⁩, the word for the living self, and join these souls to their testimony. Revelation 6:9 shows them seen after being slain; Revelation 20:4 shows them living and reigning.
