This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

The command to leave the prophecy unsealed makes its near appointed moment a message meant to be encountered now.

These words stand open to you now, with their appointed moment declared near. The prophecy is placed within your hearing in the present.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that the prophecy is sealed away for a distant future and has nothing to say to the reader now.

σφραγίσῃς

sphragisēs

GROWS FROM

σφραγ-

sphrag-

To seal or mark with a seal, securing or authenticating something.

“Do not seal” in this verse is sphragisēs. The same word family can mark belonging: Revelation uses it when God’s servants are sealed (Revelation 7:3). Here the command forbids sealing these prophetic words, so the image carries both the possibility of closure and the mark of belonging.

ALSO GROWS

sphragis: A seal or signet.

σφραγίς

The noun names the mark behind the action; the seal image can signify authentication as well as closure.

sphragizō: To seal or mark with a seal.

σφραγίζω

The same verb family appears when God’s servants are marked in Revelation 7:3, showing that sealing does not always mean hiding.

καιρός

kairos

GROWS FROM

καιρ-

kair-

A season, occasion, or fitting moment.

The word can name an occasion or season, not only a point on a clock. The verse calls that fitting moment near, giving the open prophecy urgency in the present.

ALSO GROWS

eukairos: In season or at a fitting time.

εὐκαίρως

This related form shows kairos language can describe whether a moment is fitting; here the moment is near.

akairos: Out of season or at an unfitting time.

ἀκαίρως

Its contrast with eukairos makes the root’s sense of occasion clearer: the prophecy is not left sealed past its appointed moment.

As the appointed moment draws near, prophetic words are placed before people to be heard and met in the present.

Flourishing is the one who reads aloud, and those who hear the words of this prophecy and guard what is written in it, for the season is at hand.
Revelation 1:3 · SDVThe same nearness makes reading and hearing the prophecy a present encounter.
For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and at the end it will breathe and not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it. Because it will surely come, it will not stay behind.
Habakkuk 2:3 · SDVThe vision is bound to its appointed moment, when it speaks openly and comes into view.
You also, be slow to heat, and steady your hearts, for the arrival of the LORD has drawn near.
James 5:8 · SDVThe nearness of the promised moment gives the present its weight.
But you, Daniel, stop up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall multiply.
Daniel 12:4 · SDV

Daniel is told to seal the book until the time of the end; here, with the time declared near, the command reverses. The repeated image reveals the shift from words held closed to words left open for the reader.
