This verse in the King James

King James wording
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

“Creature” and “Creator” are forms of the same Greek root, ⁨κτίζω⁩ (ktizō, “to create”): the verse turns on worship shifting from the one who creates to what is created.

The verse names a present-tense exchange: what is made takes the place of the source of making, and worship and service settle on the created thing. The exchange calls God’s truth a lie by treating what depends on its source as if it could occupy the source’s place.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie it dissolves is that what is made can become its own source or bear the weight of ultimate devotion.

κτίσις

ktisis

GROWS FROM

κτίζω

ktizō

To create, bring into being.

“creation” in this verse is ktisis. The English words sound unrelated, but both come from ⁨κτίζω⁩ (ktizō, “to create”): “creature” names what is made, while “Creator” names the one who makes. The shared root makes the verse’s inversion striking: the created thing receives the devotion directed toward its source.

ALSO GROWS

ktisma: A thing created; something made.

κτίσμα

It echoes “creature,” emphasizing that the object receiving worship belongs to what has been made.

ktistēs: Creator; one who creates.

κτίστης

This form names the source of creation and makes clear what is displaced when devotion turns toward the created thing.

ktisis: Creation; a created thing.

κτίσις

This is the form translated “creature” in the verse, linking the object of service directly to the act of creating.

When a made thing is treated as the source, devotion mistakes what is formed for the one who gives it being.

Those who make them are like them, everyone who leans on them.
Psalm 115:8 · SDVTrust settles on what human hands have made, and the makers become shaped by that misplaced trust.
And the remainder of it he makes into a god, his hewn image, and falls down to it, and bows down, and prays to it, and says, "Snatch me, for you are my god."
Isaiah 44:17 · SDVThe passage shows a made object receiving the devotion and deliverance expected from a source.
Since then we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think the divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, carved by craft and by human imagining.
Acts 17:29 · SDVWhat is formed by human skill cannot contain the source from which human life comes.
For in him all things were created, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, the seen and the unseen, whether seats or lordships or beginnings or authorities; all things have been created through him and toward him.
Colossians 1:16 · SDV

“Created” here is ⁨κτίζω⁩ (ktizō, “to create”), the same Greek root behind “creature” and “Creator” in Romans 1:25. Colossians makes the relationship explicit: what is made exists through and for its source, so Romans names the reversal when devotion goes to the made thing.
