This verse in the King James

King James wording
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Love without pretense shows itself in two movements: recoiling from evil and binding itself to good.

Love in you is unmasked when it refuses to make peace with what harms and fastens itself to what is good. Its sincerity becomes visible in what it turns away from and what it stays joined to.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that love must approve everything or stay neutral between harm and good. Here, love includes both attachment and aversion.

κολλώμενοι

kollōmenoi

GROWS FROM

κολλάω

kollaō

To glue, stick, or join closely.

“cling to” in this verse is kollōmenoi. English “cleave” can sound like merely choosing the good side; ⁨κολλάω⁩ pictures sticking to it. Love pushes away from evil and binds itself to good.

ALSO GROWS

joined: Attached or joined closely.

The same verb describes being joined to the Lord, showing the force of close attachment.

cleave: Join closely; attach.

A compound of the same root describes the joining of husband and wife, giving “cleave” the force of a bond.

ἀνυπόκριτος

anypokritos

GROWS FROM

⁨ὑπόκριτος⁩ (hypokritos), negated by ⁨ἀ-⁩ (a-)

Feigned or hypocritical; with ⁨ἀ-⁩, without pretense.

“without a mask” in this verse is anypokritos. The word’s shape makes love “without pretense”: what love claims and what it does are not split. The next clauses show this sincerity through the direction of love’s attachment.

ALSO GROWS

unfeigned: Without pretense.

The same adjective describes love that is genuine in its expression.

dissimulation: Hypocrisy or pretense.

The related noun names the pretense that the ⁨ἀ-⁩ in Romans 12:9 excludes.

Love takes shape by rejecting evil and attaching itself to what is good.

You who love the LORD, hate evil. He guards the living souls of his faithful ones; he snatches them out of the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 97:10 · SDVLove for the LORD appears alongside a clear aversion to evil.
You have loved alignment and hated living without boundary, therefore God, your God, anointed you with the oil of leaping joy beyond your sharers.
Hebrews 1:9 · SDVLove of what is right and hatred of iniquity form the same paired movement.
Let him turn aside from evil and do good; let him seek wholeness and pursue it.
1 Peter 3:11 · SDVThe verse joins turning away from evil with actively pursuing what is good.
But the one glued to the Lord is one breath.
1 Corinthians 6:17 · SDV

The verb translated “joined” here is the same ⁨κολλάω⁩ (kollaō) behind “cleave” in Romans 12:9. That makes the attachment to good concrete: love adheres to what it recognizes as good, rather than approving it from a distance.
