What Does Romans 3:5 Mean?
But if our misalignment sets beside the alignment of God, what shall we say? Is God misaligned, who brings down the burning of his anger? I speak as a human speaks.
Key words are shown with the Hebrew or Greek and what each word meant.

King James wording
King James Version
But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)THE KEY
Human misalignment can bring God’s alignment into view without making God’s anger unjust.
THE MEANING
Your misalignment may set God’s alignment in relief, but that contrast alone does not make God’s anger misaligned. The question exposes the leap from “my wrong makes God’s rightness visible” to “therefore God is wrong to answer it.”
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that your wrongdoing makes God’s anger unjust simply because it highlights God’s alignment.
THE ROOT
ἀδικία
adikía
GROWS FROM
δικ- (dik-), from δίκη (dikē)
What is right or just; justice.
The verse’s words for “unrighteousness” and “righteousness” belong to the same dik- family: the prefix a- marks what is without the just, while the other names alignment. Your misalignment can make God’s alignment stand out, but the shared measure does not make the two conditions the same.
ALSO GROWS
dikaiosynē: Righteousness; alignment.
δικαιοσύνη
This is the same root family naming the alignment the verse sets against human misalignment.
dikaios: Just, right; aligned.
δίκαιος
This quality word carries the same measure of what is right that underlies the verse’s contrast.
συνίστησιν
synistēsin
GROWS FROM
ἵστημι (histēmi), with συν- (syn-)
Stand or set in place; with syn-, set together, establish, or show forth.
“sets beside” in this verse is synistēsin. The verb translated “commend” carries the sense of establishing or showing something forth. It frames the verse as a question about what human misalignment displays, and whether that display makes God’s response unjust.
ALSO GROWS
histēmi: Stand; set in place.
ἵστημι
This is the verb base that gives “commend” a concrete sense of setting or establishing.
synistēmi: Set together, establish, show forth; commend.
συνίστημι
This is the verb’s dictionary form and the same word used when God “commendeth” love in Romans 5:8.
THE PATTERN
Human wrong can make God’s alignment visible without turning God’s judgment into wrong.
Against you alone have I missed the mark, and done the evil in your eyes, so that you are aligned in your word and clear when you judge. But God sets his own love beside us, in that while we were still missing the mark, the Anointed One died for us.As for you, you planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, to make it as it is this day, to keep a great people alive.THE THREAD
But God sets his own love beside us, in that while we were still missing the mark, the Anointed One died for us.Romans 5:8 uses the same verb translated “commend” here: συνίστημι (synistēmi), meaning to establish or show forth. There, God’s love is shown while we are still in wrongdoing, making visible what the verb means in this verse.
